Report on Horse Fly In SaturdayFighting an opposing ENE wind flow the valley below Horse launch developed its own SSW to SW wind allowing launches from 1 to 4 PM. At the best part of the day (1 PM) 10 paragliders did a lighter than air impersonation with some reaching a nearly a grand above launch. The three hangs that ventured into the air did sled rides to the valley below. Josh who had one of the best flights of the day did a perfect top landing in the launch set up area. Horse Canyon CA Fly In December 15, 2007Horse Canyon CA Fly In December 15, 2007 Invitation to the SDHGPA FLY IN at Horse Saturday December 15, 2007. strong day at torrey saturdayfun day at torrey saturday. I arrived at 10:30 and launched right away as pilots were allready soaring high. When i tried to launch it was difficult to get to the edge in a forward position so I worked it forward in a reverse position and then launched backwards and spun around in the air and then flew out over the edge. At that point I decided I may not want to land for a while or I could be grounded as it seemed like it was picking up. I flew to the north point twice and over the pier as well. It was interesting watching pilots trying to launch from the air. after a hour or so it seemed like just a few recreational pilots were flying and most people in the air were either tandems or acro pilots with small wings or hangliders. There was some very interesting spirles and wing overs happening as pilots would take it all the way down to almost sea level and then work it back up in just seconds as there was lift everywhere. It was originally my goal to fly over 4 hours stright to beat my personal best time in the air during one flight but after just 2 hours it was averaging 20 and gusting over that so I decided to go down and land on the beach instead of risking getting dragged. ( I sit behind a desk all week anyways and I needed the exersize ) over all I would say that it was a great day. I needed a great day as it has been a while since i had anything more then an extended sledder. I hate this time of year with santa anna's and all. good flying to all fun day at torreyfun day at torrey today. I flew several flights and went all the way to the north point and to the pier. bob coombs had his longest flight ever there at 3 & 1/2 hours. It was not to conjested as the lift was abundant. Torrey Pines, Saturday June 10, 2006With yesterday's prediction of just "a few hundred feet over launch" at Marshall, I chose the coast instead. And it turned out to be a good thing, as yesterday was probably the nicest air I have encountered at Torrey Pines. I got 530' above the ridge at one point, but it was easy to stay 300' over and cruise from the Pier to the North Park (where ridge drops down to a beach parking). I did the distance 6 times (3 round trips). |
