Future of Flying in Rancho Palos Verdes

Hi,

The city of Rancho Palos Verdes is having a meeting Wed evening regarding allowing Paragliding in the Portuguese Bend Nature Preserve that covers most of the South West side of PV. Please call Ara in RPV Planning (310-544-5228) to provide any input or come to the Public Use Master Plan meeting 6/4/08 at 7pm at City Hall.
Thanks for your support and pass the word on to any other pilots you know.

Alex Hurtado Accident - Update

Local PG/HG pilot Alex Hurtado was killed yesterday (Sunday, 15 July) while flying PG at Palos Verdes Peninsula near Long Beach. Initial reports were that the accident happened in Mexico.

Alex, his wife Rene and their two beautiful daughters were fixtures at Sylmar and AJ Airpark, always happy and really enjoying the moment. Alex was at the Anniversary Fly-In on Saturday, and was in fact the last pilot to compete in the HG glide contest.

RASP weather model for LA Area

I am now running a local soaring weather forecast (DRJACK's BLIBMAPS) for our LA area. The model predicts thermal strength, wind condition and some other flight related paramters for various times of the day. Results are visualized in 2D maps that cover the area from Kagel in the upper left corner to Warner Springs in the lower right. The url right now is http://www.its.caltech.edu/~gliding/SOCAL/

Santiago Peak - About 10 miles w/nw from Lake Elsinore.
A nice place to try a short XC from Elsinore. Good luck!!!

Vintage fly-in and Grand re-opening --Dockweiler 9-9-2000--

I posted this on the web back in 2000. It's a neat flashback to the roots of Hang gliding.
