Jeff Craig Memorial and Dahlsten Cup

A memorial service for Jeff Craig will be held this Saturday, Sept 13 at Sylmar in conjunction with the annual Dahlsten Cup http://www.shga.com/.

We've had many visitors from Sylmar this summer and I hope we can return the favor and have a good turnout at their event.

Heart breaker

We've lost another brother:

Let's learn from this tragedy. Let's re-examine our site and our habits. Are our flying habits and landings safe?

A visit to Rob's accident "red dot" page shows that we may well be next on the news, for reasons much worse even than developer hassles.

What can we do to honor Jeff's life by learning from

Sylmar Fly-In (Dahlsten Cup) 9/13/08

The SHGA has scheduled the Dahlsten Cup Fly-In for Saturday 9/13/08 - one week after the CSS Fly-in.

Activities vary from year-to-year but have included an Open Class and Sport Class competion with GPS scoring, a Chili Cookoff, spot landing contest, stated duration flight, and more.

There is no fee to participate.

The SHGA's day use fee is $5 but is pretty much an on-your-honor pay basis - no one is actively monitoring payment. If you honestly forget to pay - oh well. If you intentionally don't pay - you're a "real piece of work".

Sylmar Flying

Flyin appeared to be a success. Lots of pilots, Great food, and friendly people. Got to 5000 on my Skyhawk and probably could have got higher, but the drift was severe and had to pull out well before thermals topped out. Air was really rowdy at times and got pitched around pretty good several times. Launched the Towers West of Kagel and got pummeled pretty badly. Crossed over to Kagel and
made a low save. Flew for two hrs and then made an attempt to land.

RASP weather model for LA Area

I am now running a local soaring weather forecast (DRJACK's BLIBMAPS) for our LA area. The model predicts thermal strength, wind condition and some other flight related paramters for various times of the day. Results are visualized in 2D maps that cover the area from Kagel in the upper left corner to Warner Springs in the lower right. The url right now is http://www.its.caltech.edu/~gliding/SOCAL/
