3 hour tour day - Dec. 13th 2008

The year is almost up, I suppose I should actually gin up some activities. While I can do a ham cram or some other non-flying activity, or an activity at our home site, in this case I am thinking about a road trip. Here's the problem with road trips: who wants to go anywhere in the Spring and Fall seasons, when it likely will be best at home?

But, December is another story.

December 13th, I invite everyone to join me in a day of chasing the wind. I'll call this a "Three Hour Tour," not because we'll only be gone a few hours (try all day), but because the radius of the chase will be 3 hours. That basically takes us up to Santa Barbara or down to San Diego.

Saturday 9/30 Could Be... Interesting

From the Friday 3 A.M. NWS Forecast Discussion:

SATURDAY: WITH DEEPER MOISTURE IN PLACE AND AN INVERTED TROUGH TRACKING ACROSS OUR AREA...SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE POSSIBLE JUST ABOUT ANYWHERE IN THE OUR CWA (extreme southwestern California including Orange, San Diego, western Riverside and southwestern San Bernardino counties). SATURDAY WILL BE DOWNRIGHT TROPICAL WITH HIGHER THAN NORMAL HUMIDITIES. PW`S (precipitable water) IN EXCESS OF 2 INCHES ARE FORECAST OVER THE LOWER DESERTS. EASTERLY WINDS FROM 20-30 KT ALOFT WILL TRANSPORT ANY THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY WESTWARD ACROSS THE MTNS AND INTO THE COASTAL AND VALLEY ZONES. THESE WILL BE FAST MOVING STORMS WHICH WILL LOWER THE FLASH FLOOD THREAT. BUT WITH SUCH HIGH PRECIPITABLE WATER VALUES...FLASH FLOODING IS DISTINCTLY POSSIBLE IN TRAINING ECHOS.

June Bugs?

Did I miss the June Bugs this year? They often show up in late May, but I don't think I saw any. Usually there's about a week where they're all over the screens at night here in San Bernardino.

I also haven't noticed any butterfly-heavy days while flying this year. A few years ago we had that period in late Spring when the migrating Monarchs were splattering windshields and marking out thermals - quite a sight to be in a gaggle of Monarchs at 6000 MSL.
hang gliding exhibit at john wayne airport

sitting at the john wayne airport baggage claim area (as i often do) i've thought how cool it would be to see hang gliders hanging from the ceiling. after all, orange county is the home of wills wing, southern california was the epicenter for hang gliding in the seventies, and well, it's an airport!

a month of emails, phone calls, letters, and face to face meetings with the airport administration followed... and this morning, i received notice from the curator of the john wayne airport arts commission that my proposal for a hang gliding exhibit at the john wayne airport, has been officially (and unanimously) approved!
christmas gift for that special pilot in your life...

christmas is right around the corner, and it's time to start thinking about what your flying spouse/significant other would like as a gift.

the c.s.s. is here to help you! starting january 1st through may 31st, the prorated cost for joining the glider storage facility drops to only $200. yup that's it. your favorite pilot can store two wings in cozy comfort through the winter months, and at the same time, you get those pesky wings out of your garage. it's a win-win!

Offshore Sunday? (Thursday?)

Not complaining, but October isn't usually this moist, is it?

If the NWS forecasts are accurate (as they have been lately) we're looking at weak offshore winds Thursday and Friday, brief onshore with a deep marine layer Saturday, followed by strong offshore for Sun/Mon/Tue, possibly longer.

Marshall will probably be flyable <s>Thu and</s> Fri, at least late in the day.

17:00 Wed - NWS is now saying "North wind between 15 and 20 mph, with gusts as high as 35 mph" for Thursday...
