Memorial Day - Other Side of the Hill

What a difference a short distance makes. Went to Blackhawk on Monday. While eating breakfast in Hesperia the winds seemed strong and West. Arriving at launch the winds were light and blowing straight in.

Joe Greblo launch first and worked hard to find lift. Rich Gribsby launch next and found the same conditions. Getting low out towards the L/Z they finally found the strong lift but it was tight. Rich's bank angle looked to be 70 degrees but was rewarded with 1,000' up.
Palmdale Avenue S or other Desert Sites Sunday 04/13/08

I was thinking of flying at the Palmdale Avenue S site Sunday 04/13/08, or perhaps one of the other desert sites on the north side of the San Bernardino mountains. Is anyone interested?

For any site I would really like to fly there with someone who has flown the site before, but this is not a requirement.

The forecast is for ENE winds tomorrow in the desert.

Marshall Peak & Surounding Next Weekend

I'm bringing a goup of about 5 of us next week March 27th. We will be ready to fly starting Friday March 28th but have never been to Marshall or the surrounding areas before.

I'm hoping to find someone who would be able to help us out with some site info.

Most of us are P3 or advanced P2 pilots.

Someone emailed me a while back but I lost his number.

Thanks,
T.Lee
Fausto

Sad news. Our friend and fellow pilot, Fausto, has died suddenly from complications of an very recent illness. It all apparently happened so fast. He was a kind and soft spoken PG pilot so much liked by all the pilots and visitors to the site. Dianne and I extend our condolences to his family and friends. He will surely be missed.

Mingus Flyin

Several Eteamers made the Trek to Arizona. Had a great time. Saturday day one really good. Several people got to 13000 or better. My best was 12500. One big X/C flight by a local approximately 60 miles to Seligman. Pretty good considering storm/lightning conditions.
Bill Soderquist won the spot landing contest by placing his Litespeed on the target. I was very close, but that didn't count.
I Love to teach HG

Introducing flight to someone that has never experienced it in any form at all is the most wonderful of wonderful experiences.
I took Paul to the Pepper Ave sand dunes today for his first ever encounter with flight- he'd never been airborne at all, not by airline, nor Cessna, nor hot-air balloon.
But he flew. And at the end of the day he flew quite well.
He's stoked. And I'm overjoyed, such a wonderful gift I have, to be able to give the gift of flight.
la salinas friday & saturday

great flying this weekend at la salinas. joe popper and myself had mutiple flights with about 700 foot gain above the ridge. lots of really strong thermals and about 17 mph stright in at launch both days. we ended both our days with flights right to our hotel room on the beach. we saw only one other pilot late saturday after we had allready landed. the trail up is well marked and only slightly more then a hike up from torrey. i allways thought that this was mostly a ridge site but the thermals were diffenitely cranking. on the way home we stopped at torrey and flew some more. watch out for the sharp rocks on launch, i tore three lines on launch. attached are two pictures of joe on launch and then landing on the beach by the hotel.
RASP weather model for LA Area

I am now running a local soaring weather forecast (DRJACK's BLIBMAPS) for our LA area. The model predicts thermal strength, wind condition and some other flight related paramters for various times of the day. Results are visualized in 2D maps that cover the area from Kagel in the upper left corner to Warner Springs in the lower right. The url right now is <s>http://www</s><s>.its.caltech.edu/~gliding/SOCAL/</s>
