Simba Weather StationAfter voting (With a paper ballot! My candidate might win this time!) I went to the Ball's house to see what I could do for the weather station. They weren't home, so I couldn't get to anything, but looking at the sensor mast I saw that one of the lower mounts had shifted around a bit, making the mast only appear to be bent. One of the anemometer cups is off and David found it on their deck. If the cup can't be snapped back on (they have to be snapped on when the unit is unpacked) I can replace the anemometer/wind vane with the old non-heated one. The heated one freezes up pretty readily, so no big deal. I'll try again in a few days. Sites > Crestline News > Website Thanks SteveI was up there on Wednesday straightening the lower mast and stuff. Rebar Dan spotted me from launch when he was deciding not to fly (puffing north) and he came over to help and lend moral support. I put the old non-heated anemo/vane from several years ago on the mast and spliced a plug onto the cable that goes to the base station and popped them together but got no signal downstairs at the station. Looking more closely at the newer anemo/vane we've been using, I saw that the cup wasn't broken off after all, just popped out, so I popped it on and put the unit back on the mast and spliced the cut cable ends back together by stripping, twisting and taping (to avoid having plugs and a connector out in the elements). Lotsa tape. There was only an occasional puff of wind, but still no signal (except now reading S at 0 MPH instead of N). Somewhere in there I noticed that I'd put the cup in backwards! Lowered the mast and repositioned the cup and re-raised the mast. It spun better, but still no signal. By then it had been a couple of hours and I couldn't face pulling the stuff down yet again. I'm thinking I'll go back up there and re-do the cable splice with a soldering gun and hope for the best. Good Flying, Arrows for IlliteratesSimba must live! Simba Good! Never know when you might need someone at your back in the Crestline ghetto. Do they make such a thing as a solid-state anemometer, to be more weather resistant?
