Elsinore Sat 5/31

Saturday totally a different day than Friday. Some pilots were good enough to get above the constant up and down cycles over the spine.
Many of us struggled for quite awhile. Some finally giving up and
seeking the LZ. After at least 30 minutes of tight scratching
with several wings found and cored a tight thermal which broke me through the wind layer. The pilots who had gotten up earlier
had already left for X/C. Jerry who I had flown with on Friday again was my flying partner. The stronger lift was just behind launch where I spent alot of time. Tried going to South towers early and got drilled. Saw Jerry heading for Rad Dans and heard Everday Mike on his new radio expressing how good it was down near

Elsinore Fri 5/30

Awesome flying. Kissed the clouds several times, got really cold,
Serious wire snaps. My max altitude was 7350 approximately 200ft above clouds. Everyday Mike managed 7400. Lost sight of him
when he got under a pretty sweet cumi. Took off around noon. Back flag had been waffleing down. Launch flag died once then reinstated. Good launch caught the house thermal and never looked back. About 2:15 decided to land, but shear was in the middle of LZ, so I thermaled up over the lake and boated around until the LZ

hang gliding exhibit at john wayne airport

sitting at the john wayne airport baggage claim area (as i often do) i've thought how cool it would be to see hang gliders hanging from the ceiling. after all, orange county is the home of wills wing, southern california was the epicenter for hang gliding in the seventies, and well, it's an airport!

a month of emails, phone calls, letters, and face to face meetings with the airport administration followed... and this morning, i received notice from the curator of the john wayne airport arts commission that my proposal for a hang gliding exhibit at the john wayne airport, has been officially (and unanimously) approved!
Larry Grimes Passes Away

More sad news I'm afraid. Pilot, friend and neighbor, Larry Grimes passed away last week from complications of cancer. http://www.legacy.com/PE/Obituaries.asp?Page=Notice&PersonID=98445952

Larry and his twin brother Garry shared a hang glider in the 80's. They both left the sport when they started to have families. Larry got back into flying, and was joined by his son Joey, about 4 years ago. Never one to do the same thing too often, Larry took his glider all over southern California.
I lost my stuf bag (and my jumper)

Hi Guys

Yesterday I flew Marshall and what a blast. It was my first flight in California and I had a lot of fun. 60 minutes in the air, two base clouds and themals of +4.5 m/s. Thanks Rob, Wayne, Al and Jerome for show me the site.

But, I left my stuff bag and a black sweater in the LZ. If somebody found them, would you mind let me know please? I will be more than happy to pay for the S&H to send it to Houston, my new home.
access to marshall

It appears that we will be able to resurrect the USFS Volunteer program of 2 years ago. This is where a small group of pilots have been trained and uniformed by the USFS to escort pilots through the locked areas. In return we are asked to help patrol on the ground and in the air for any illegal entry into the closed areas. If you want to fly Marshall Peak, please call me for daily details on how this program works.
