Report From Scotty Farnsworth on 11/8/08 PG Accident

Logged flight 649

The day started off with the North winds diminishing and predicted to turn onshore. I was hopeful that I could make my first cross country flight as it is usually good conditions the first day after a North event when it turns onshore. We arrived at Marshall at around noon and started to get our gear together. I launched after Jérôme and after initially sinking I was able to hook some thermals and climb up to what I believe was 1500’ to 2000’ over launch. As we discussed before launch I could hear them on the radio but I could not respond with my microphone attachment giving me trouble. Bob and Jérôme indicated that they were going to fly over to the next mountain and again try and climb up.

University Hills Story in the Press-Enterprise

On Thursday, Dec. 24 the Riverside Press-Enterprise newspaper ran a story about the threat of structures being built under our HG approach path. The reporting was accurate and balanced but didn't reflect a lot of the questions that the reporter asked during the hour that Jonathan and I met with him at the LZ.

Smoke Wall Across Fontana - OC and LA Fires

Here's a view from a turnout on 138 to Crestline, Sunday 11/16 around 16:00.
The light Santa Ana winds were holding the smoke from the Triangle Complex and Sayre fires in a wall over Fontana.

2008 CSS Toy Drive Saturday, Dec. 20th

We're having our annual toy drive on Saturday December 20. We collect unwrapped toys for all ages and add them to the nearby fire station's toy gathering efforts. The firefighters bring a truck out to the LZ and we get to interact in a non-emergency situation. We haven't seen them much this year, which is a good thing!

Club funds will be used, as usual, to purchase a cart or two of toys beforehand, so if you'd like to donate to that effort in advance, please do. You can leave a donation in the site drop box in a day-use envelope (write 'toy drive' on the envelope),with any CSS officer

Scotty's accident and recovery

I want to share what I learned about Scotty's accident (Saturday Nov 8 around 1:30pm)...

I met Scotty at the Loma Linda hospital.
According to himself, he stalled his wing at 50' over ground trying to land on a clearing.
He was using extra braking to degrade his glide towards his selected LZ.
My guess of the location is: 34 deg 9.200 min North, 117 deg 12.299 min West.

Soboba, Saturday October 18, 2008 - Convergence

Up until 3pm, I wasn't sure if I should high-tail out of Soboba for Marshall or not. And buddies were getting restless. Winds had been cross from the right (West) all afternoon. Then the "what-the-hell-let's-try-anyway" attitude kicked in.
I was rewarded with a steady climb of increasing rate up to 7400', and other pilots rapidly followed. Up at altitude, no cross-wind, just a perfect straight-in at about 9 mph.

Friday October 17, 2008 - Over the back

Launched at noon, started sinking but then got up to 8000' between Marshall and Crestline. Wind was light but SSE, so I thought going "over the back" would be more interesting than battling a headwind towards the dam. Glided to Pine and there go up to altitude again before crossing to Lake Silverwood and the desert. Max altitude of 8500', but the nice part was the thermal were soft-edged, stayed high and kept many landing options, and the air was very clear (see pictures). 20 mile flight to Hesperia.

Rob Kells Memorial Church Service (Location Changed)

Location Changed - The morning church service will now be at a different facility, near the originally announced location. See the link below.

We have decided, with Juanita Jackson's blessing, to honor Rob Kells at this year's Andy Jackson Memorial Fly-In, Saturday September 6, 2008. Trish Kells has planned a church service for Rob that morning and all are invited to attend the church service or come to the fly-in, or both. Please see the announcement on the Wills Wing website for details.

University Hills Housing Development

The Andy Jackson Airpark is home to 30 years of hang gliding history in San Bernardino. We are now threatened by a 980 home development called University Hills. The current plan includes 12 homes at the extreme north west corner of the project that would block the landing approach to the airpark. The project also includes 234 acres of open space. We need your help to ask the City and the developer to keep the approach clear. Move the open space (a little) and keep hang gliding alive and healthy in San Bernardino. We are not opposed to the housing development at all. We simply want to eliminate the need to swoop low over homes on our landing approach and minimize the potential problems for pilots and homeowners. The Draft Environmental Impact Report is available now on the City website: http://www.ci.san-bernardino.ca.us/depts/devserv/planning

Andy Jackson/Rob Kells Memorial Fly-In

Andy Jackson 8/15/1937 – 9/5/1985

Rob Kells 9/7/1955 – 8/9/2008

Andy founded the original Pinecrest Airpark here in San Bernardino. Rob was President and an owner of Wills Wing, Inc. Both men dedicated their lives to hang gliding and free flight in general, and we lost both to prostate cancer.
