CSS Toy Drive, Saturday Dec. 16, 2006

We're having our annual toy drive on Saturday December 16. We collect unwrapped toys for all ages and add them to the nearby fire station's toy gathering efforts. The firefighters bring a truck out to the LZ and we get to interact in a non-emergency situation. We haven't seen them much this year, which is a good thing!

Flyable or not, there will be pilots, snacks and beverages in the LZ all afternoon. See you there!

9 September 2006 - Andy Jackson Memorial Fly-In

Mark your calendars

The annual Andy Jackson Memorial Fly-In is coming up Saturday, September 9, 2006 (the weekend after Labor Day).

We're gonna' wrap up the Summer with another great day of flying, Santa Ana winds permitting. We can usually count on the first weeks of September being flyable, but with the unusual weather we've had so far this season, who knows? Double D's BBQ will be cooking the grub again - burgers, dogs, and hot links this time. They did a great job at the Anniversary fly-in, so come hungry. Di says no raffle this time, but there'll be another fun contest and lots of music and pilots, friends and family.

Fly-In Images, New Member, Forum & Contributors

Trish Stitz, whose fiancee is WW's Rob Kells, sent a bunch of great photos from the recent Fly-In - I've posted them on her behalf. Thanks Trish! Also, thanks to Mishi for the pics she took the time to post.

I noticed a new member who's joined our website. Read Paul Schaefer's description for some interesting CSS history info. Welcome Paul, and Thanks!

Contest Results - Spot Landing, 12th Anniversary Fly-In

The first-place pilots in both categories did not participate in the cash side-pot, but the second-place pilots did.

HG Spot

  1. Butch Peachy - 8 ft.
  2. Mark Hoffman - 9 ft., Talon 150 (won the side-pot)

PG Spot
  1. Mike Estrada / Zach Hoisington - on target (tie)
  2. Frank Pelant - ? ft. (won the side-pot)

Zach Hoisington sent video of his great Tandem PG spot landing (3.3M, non-streaming).

The Fly-In Was a Great Success!

Thanks to all who helped out and all who participated!

After Flight Chow-down: Great day of flying, and fun party at the L.Z. - Brian RicheyAfter Flight Chow-down: Great day of flying, and fun party at the L.Z. - Brian RicheyThe day had pretty darn good conditions, varying from booming mid-day to light mid-afternoon when the sun was behind an alto-strat layer for an hour, to very bouyant and glassy late in the day. We have some images from the day and links to pilot reports and contest results here. Post your thoughts on the day in the pilot reports or events sections of the forum - we'll add links here, and if you have images either post them to the Image Galleries or send them to , with caption and credit if you can, and we'll post them for you.

8 July 2006 - 12th Anniversary Fly-In

May 29 - Great flying at the Starthistle (Woodrat, Oregon)

On may 29, dozens of pilots reached Grants Pass from Woodrat (Oregon) during the Starthistle (fly-in event).

Stats on my flight

Pictures (click the thumbnail for a larger image)...
Over Woodrat, and starting the glide towards Rabbies. Lots of pilots marking the lift.

All These Worlds Are Yours...

Okay, maybe that's a bit much. I'm really excited about the possibilities of our new CSS website though. The website engine is a complex, open source framework for community building, and we're already a really strong community of pilots. We have nowhere to go but up.

Not Unlike the Original WebsiteNot Unlike the Original WebsiteMany of you have wanted the CSS website to be more than it was, as have I, for some time. For the last few years the weather station and Owen Morse's webcam have been the focus of my CSS website efforts - they're useful, fun, challenging and nifty. The forum ran itself, mostly, and the rest of the static content was ho-hum.

Anemometer Rime

Anemometer Rime

The big March 2006 snowstorm walloped Crestline, knocking out power and making our weather station's instrument pole lean waaay over.

Vote and Survey Results

The CSS General Meeting on Saturday, April 29, was sparsely attended, with a a few non-Board members who had clearly made a point of being there for the meeting and a number of members who happened to be there and so participated. There was good discussion, mostly about 'the Ranch', including one excellent suggestion to look for possible tax breaks based on land use - i.e. in Florida if one has a few cows on a property then it is considered agricultural land and either not taxed or only lightly taxed. That specific option is unlikely here, but something like it might pertain.
