Marshall Peak Fence Project Completed! CSS Rocks!

A large and enthusiastic group came with an awesome array of tools and worked very hard, completing the work by about 5:30 PM - Story and photos will be on the website within a few days. Thanks very much to everyone!

"Day 2" workers who were to go in with weedwackers still needed on Sunday. Work begins 9:00 AM, should be completed by 11:00 AM. Please bring 5 gallon jugs of water for fire safety if you can.

The fence is needed due to the 'Old' fire.

Marshall is OPEN for driving in and flying!

The letter-writing campaign has been a great success! Thanks to all who have participated.
Letters are no longer needed.


Work Party Details :

Where to Meet: The entrance to the Marshall Road.

When to Meet: Shoot for meeting between 9 AM and 9:30 AM each work day. Try to arrive before 9:15. Better early than late.

Days scheduled: Currently we are shooting for the 29th and 30th of May. Please check into the website prior to each work day to be sure the work party is still on.

Parking: Most workers will be parking out at the turnout near Hwy 18. Only the specific vehicles (pickup trucks) that will be shuttling railway ties will be used to take workers to Marshall Peak.

Shuttle Trucks: Please contact Rob McKenzie using if you have a truck that can be used to haul 4 or 5 rwy ties and workers during the work day. We are looking for about 6 trucks at this point. These trucks should plan on arriving about 8:45 AM for briefing.

Food: Sandwiches and soft drinks and water will be provided for everyone but if you have special needs feel free to bring your own.

Toilets: The USFS said they will provide a porta-pottie each day, but bringing your own private stash of TP might be a good idea.

Tools: Sledgehammers will be needed - Please contact Rob McKenzie using if you have a hammer that can be used for driving rebar through railroad ties. Everyone should have work gloves, and also what are needed are shovels and picks. Be sure to put your name on your tools. We think the specialty tools and materials are already taken care of. If we come across a special need we will make it known at the top of this page as the needs arise.

FLYING?: There are no provisions right now to turn the day into a Marshall Peak flying day - there will be no driving out to Marshall Peak to fly on Memorial Day Weekend. We are rather planning on turning the summer into a flying summer.

CSS President Rob McKenzie had a very productive meeting with USFS reps on Monday, 10 May. The USFS is going to allow the CSS to install barricades and gates along the road to the top of Marshall and at the peak to limit damage to the area from vehicular traffic. See Rob's graphic to the right for an overview. The road to Marshall will be open to the general public when we are done.


The USFS first has to repair the road, and they are planning to have this done by 21 May. The USFS also has two gates we can collect, repair as needed, and install where indicated, to control access to the roads down Marshall from the 3-way split just north of the peak. The CSS will provide the railroad ties, rebar, other hardware, and LABOR to complete the project.

We are estimating (based on the LZ perimiter project) that $14,000 worth of materials and two-days' labor with a large crew of volunteers will be needed. The work party is scheduled for 29-30 May.

It looks like the rest of Marshall will be closed to vehicles for another two years, but at least we'll have the peak!
While the CSS has the funds on-hand to carry out this important project, we will accept donations from those so inclined.
