HAM training day(s) planning

On a recent flying day at Soboba, I mentioned to Alan Crouse that I really needed to stop slacking and get my HAM radio technician license so I could operate (legally) a radio while flying. Alan replied (I paraphrase), "A HAM radio training day at Marshall sounds exactly like something a new activities coordinator would put together!" So there we have it, looks like I've got a new task!

The current vague outline is either a one day training, or two days of training, either the same weekend, or spread over two weekends. Spread over two weekends would give people time to study up what they learned, before taking the test the next weekend. Ideally, by the end of the training day(s), folks would walk away licensed HAM radio technicians, ready to add their words of wisdom to the AJ Airpark airwaves.

I've gotten a suggestion to call the folks over at Windsports to see how they run their HAM day, I'll be doing that shortly.

Thoughts? Is there interest in something like this? Suggestions from folks that have participated in something like this?

Please post comments here, or email me (peter at peterjohanson dot com)

I've added a page to track the planning of the HAM class, please feel free to edit that, or make comments with suggestions. I will keep updating that with more details as the planning continues:

HAM training day(s) planning

Sounds like a great idea! I'm in.

Advance notice

Great idea, much appreciated.

Please give as much notice as possible. If I have a few months notice, I can call dibs (in the family sched) on a weekend much better. Especially if it's one day a weekend for two weekends.

Candidate days, contacts at CSUSB?

A timeframe of "sometime in June" was requested, and Alan wanted something after the 9th as he's away before then, so the candidate weekends, as of right now, are either June 16th, or June 23rd. Any opinions/preferences?

Also, does anyone have an in with anyone at CSUSB? I called them today to find out about space, and they mostly gave me the run around, said they don't do special treatment for not-for-profits (I tried to work that angle), and let me know that they'd be closed those days *anyways*, so they'd charge us even more to use the space, since they'd specifically have to be open for us, etc. Sounds like that space is out, unless someone has a contact.

I've since called one or two other leads, will maybe try calling any churches in the area that might lend us space? Other ideas for places to have this?

Day's Inn - Possible!

Bob:

I just called them and they said a room for 20 people with tables and chairs was available on June 30. Cost $250 plus tax.

Sounds doable.

Alan

That sounds like something

That sounds like something we could definitely do. I'm going up tomorrow to the C-Bar-C weekly meeting to talk to their president about trying to set up a class. Will hopefully have good news to report after meeting with him. I've updated the planning page to include the latest details. Everyone, please feel free to do the same if you get more details about things like the Days Inn stuff, etc.

Have we pondered what sort of pricing approach we want to take for this? Cost for non CSS members, and a reduced cost for CSS folks? Same price for all? Does the CSS want to chip in at all for costs, or should the attendee costs cover everything? No idea how these things usually go.
