It's Time for a Restricted Landing Field (RLF) Clinic

Do you have the bug to fly X-C?
Do you want to land safely in unfamiliar places?

Then the RLF Clinic is for you!

I had a long chat with Hungary Joe at SHGA yesterday about having a Restricted Landing Field (RLF) clinic. This would be a very, very good thing for anyone who hasn't already had the training and is considering flying X-C or is concerned about landing out for whatever reason.

2N40-16D

The other day Kathy offered to drive me to launch.
I said YES please.
She likes to hike the 2N40 from the gate at hwy 18 to launch and then drive the car down. In the evenings this is great hike with lots of shade.
I offered my car because I would hate for something bad to happen to her new car. She didn’t care either way.

This morning I walked out to the driveway and noticed I had a flat. I told Kathy and she was very sorry then she was thankful then she passed on her story of picking up three 16D framing nails on her hike in. I told her I picked up the fourth.
Landout sites

I think I have stumbled on the mother lode of online landout site information. Go to www.socalsoaring.com and click on "landout sites". The information is written from the perspective of xc sailplane pilots.

THANKS TO DINO!!!

Thanks to Dino for his tireless efforts and enthusiasm in putting together an historic aerobatics display in honor of Rob Kells and all other inhabitants of the celestial bird farm! At approximately 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 6, 2008 at Andy Jackson Airpark, Dino Dinaso, John Heiney, Bill Soderquist, Dave Biddle, and Erik Delf (Mitch would have been there, but he wasn't able to get back up to launch in time) all participated in the world's first simultaneous, smoke-trailed, five-man loop! It was spectacular and Rob, I'm sure, was joyous! Congratulations to all! YOU MADE HISTORY!!! CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THE VID!
Memorial Fly In Pics and Vids

Dianne throws a mean party and yesterday was a great memorial to the lives of two men who gave so much to our enjoyment of an amazing support.

I'll be collating the landings and what I could get of the missing man and loop formations in a bit, but for now, here are some pics to start. I'd really like to see as many as possible from others. (My pics pop to bigger ones).

SoCal XC League - 9-6-08

Dean Stratton writes:

"Let me start off by saying that Marshall has been off the hook over the last few days. Since Monday, pilots have been getting up between 8-10k routinely. The best part is that the weather is forecasted to stay exactly the same way until this coming Monday. This weekend could be awesome!"

and

"The schedule for Saturday will be changed to allow those pilots who are attending the church memorial service for Rob Kells, which is to be held in Chino Hills at 10:30 in the morning. I’m canceling the GPS class that was scheduled at 9 a.m. since there just isn’t enough time for pilots to attend the class and still make it to the service. On Saturday the pilot briefing will take place on launch at 1 p.m. and I will have a pretty good idea of the task outlines for the day, but I will still need the task committee members to meet with me as soon as you arrive on launch to finalize the tasks. The task board should be up by 1:15 and if everything goes right we should have a race start time of 2:15. I’ll be on launch by 12:30, so if you’re able to get there a bit early it will definitely help with check-in. The BBQ that is planned for the fly-in starts at 4 p.m. and runs to 6 or 6:30. With some luck we can get a great task in and still have plenty of time to make it to the LZ and load up a plate. Be prepared, there will a lot of people showing up for the fly-in; parking will be crazy. Plan on hanging around in the LZ after your flight, there’s plenty of entertainment planned for the evening."
Fly-In Parking

Rob McKenzie is going to be parking meister.
No doubt there will be a good chance that you will be parked a long way from the lawn. The plan is to have a small area in the NW corner that will be a temporary loading zone. The zone will be inside the railroad tie fence, adjacent the lawn, and marked with some cones. So at the end of the day when you want to load wing(s) onto your vehicle, usage will probably go something like....

Wireless access at the LZ - Live

John Samul is a great tenant for the Cross Country Ranch house. He had a power outlet, a cat 5 cable running to his computer, and a phone line set up in the perfect spot for us to get wireless at the LZ.

I'm posting this from it.

The network to connect to is

CSS

The WPA key is

crestline

I password protected it to keep people from leeching off it down the road, as the antenna has pretty good range. I've got 4 bars at the gazebo, though it took a little bit for it to acquire the IP address. I think that's because the signal from my computer is not coming from as large an antenna.
