Gate Party

Please join the fun for a couple of USFS gate work parties.

On Saturday Feb 13th we plan to meet at the LZ at 8:30 AM. We caravan out to the location near the 15 and 138. I can take up to truckload of 8 in the Mcshuttle. The plan is to extract a gate and bring it on a flatbed trailer back to the LZ. Total project time <3 hours.

Then the next day, Sunday February 14th, (separate work party) also meet at the LZ at 8:30 AM, we use Gracie to yank out the current gate at the bottom front of 2N40 and place the gate from the previous day in the same spot.

In the future, perhaps several weeks away, we'll have repaired the gate taken from the second work party, and place it at a half way point to Regionals which in theory would allow the USFS to close only the bad section of the road leaving the lower safe section open to the 750 launch.

Contact Rob at (909) 379-9095 or email to let me know which party(s) you are able to attend.

So far we have... Saturday

So far we have...
Saturday 8:30 AM at LZ, ... myself, John W, Zeller, Kenny and Meg bringing 4wd truck and comealong, Dusty bringing electric, jackhammer (using club generator), and Joel meeting at hwy 138 by usfs gate.

Sunday, Gracie the tractor, myself and Zeller, am I missing anyone else?

Sunday

Rob,

I think I can join on Sunday.

Mike B.

See you at 8am Sat morn Rob..

at the lz... of course!

Keep on Rolling

Rob, I think Sunday is getting sandbagged by valentine's day.

If the extraction goes well, I can stick around for a same day reinstallation.

I was going to hang around for other reasons, anyway... those can sorta wait.

John, I'll Second That...

Don't know what is needed for the re-install, but if we could get her in one day, that's bitchin, and I'll be there. I can bring an old fashioned posthole digger if that will help... Joel P.S. Sunday I'm somebody else's bitch...
work to live, don't live to work

Day 1 is a great success

Day 1 is a great success considering the immense size of the gate (if it can be called that.
Day 2 Sunday morning is still a go for meeting at 8:30 at the LZ. We have me and Ken and Meg, ChrisVV, Zeller and hopefully Wayne.

Recap. Today the gate turned out to be a monster. Dusty went hard at chipping the concrete but it was slow going. We opted after an hour to try to lift the gate off the post. With a gang of, what did we have 10? we could barely budge it but we needed a way to keep it up. So we slid it up the bank as we went up a couple inches at a time. Eventually we got the trailer parked under the pivot point of the gate and with a truck jack, managed that last few inches to roll it off the post. Soon it was on the trailer. The posts remain and Kenny has rented an industrial air compressor powered hammer. Tomorrow we only remove the posts. No installation. That will be a future date.

Oh and BTW. Later at the LZ I made a test lift of the gate with Gracie and although it takes a few test lifts to get the balance point of the gate and centered on the bucket so there is no twisting, it lifts with ease.

Thanks everyone!!!!!

Awesome work everyone.

Awesome work everyone. Thanks. We have the gate extracted and at the LZ. We'll work on trying to get just 1 project namely one gate installation (no removal). It'll probably be at least a couple weeks away. Stay tuned. Gracie is all fueled and ready!

CSS Exceeds Expectations Again

Thanks to Kenny and Megret for renting a 100 pound pneumatic jack-hammer to finish the job. Kenny man handled The Beast for over an hour, then Wayne and Chris took turns. Jeff played a key role, climbing down in the hole and helping to lift the hammer and direct the chisel with his hands. He had an uncanny ability to pick the best spots to drill. Rob worked the tool alone where only one man could fit between the post and the hill. Finally Kenny pulled both posts out of the ground with his truck when we got down to the last foot of cement.

Amazingly Dusty had done the first 1/3 of the job yesterday alone with a little electric hammer that weighed no more than 15 pounds. We were glad to have the big hammer today which was powered by an air compressor driven by a four cylinder diesel engine. It was pretty tough going down near the bottom. Before we started the project the Forestry Department had been concerned that we were going to find the job too big. But when the going gets tough, CSS gets going.

Rob said a new gate would have cost $1500. Nice job gang!

Pix or It Didn't Happen

Seriously though, great work one and all. Thanks for pitching in to help ensure the 750 stays accessible. I launch from there a lot. I woulda' been there to help, but, well, umm... I'm allergic to pneumatics. Yeah, that's the ticket.

Too bad Ken,

I could of introduced you to Morgan Fairchild.

I got a phone call from

I got a phone call from Robert Moreno (our usfs hang glider rep). We have the permission to install this gate at our preferred spot above the 750 and subsequently do a fix on the broken gate at the bottom of 2N40. Nice!

post installed

Last week the post hole for the pivot end of the gate was dug. Then the post was concreted into place. Very solid placement in almost 100% rock. (tough digging)
Then today Dianne and Big John and I headed up with the hell gate itself. I pulled Gracie's strings as Big John wiggled the gate and in 3 minutes we had it slid onto the post. Gracie grinned a big one because she knew how much work we all did getting the gate off the post. Thank you Foundation for Free Flight!

Passive Voice

"the post hole ... was dug", "the post was concreted" - Rob, we know you worked your tail off, breaking rocks in the hot sun. Thanks for seeing this daunting job through to the end.

posting

post posted post post installation.

Another Post to be Planted?

Thanks for the hard work Rob. Did you put a whole yard of cement in?

Does the other post still need to go in? Can the hole be smaller for that one?

Gate Post Installed

Rob McKenzie, with help from Di McKenzie and John Samul, finished installing the the post for the gate on 6/18. The post is anchored with over a cubic yard of concrete, so it should stay put for a while. Digging the hole for the post, making the form, and pouring the concrete was a huge job that Rob took on almost single-handedly. Thanks Rob!

Nice pics, thanks. Rob,

Nice pics, thanks.

Rob, please call me when you're setting out for tasks like that. I may not be a lot of help but a little is better than nuthin'.

Hang Gliding is inherently fun
