Wings and Sails

Anyone following the Americas Cup? Biggest wing (230 feet tall)and largest sails (Almost 7000 square feet) ever made for racing sailboats! The boats, a trimaran and a catamaran are over 90 feet long and about 90 feet wide. Capable of three times the wind speed. The race starts Monday, Live on the internet but you'll have to get up early at 1 am to see it live. I use to race Hobiecats so will be following this. If Oracle wins the cup comes back to America.

Sail Boats?

Man you must be bored.

I love sailing. Thanks

I love sailing. Thanks for the heads-up.

Hang Gliding is inherently fun

vertical wings

Sailing is great fun! Flying on water. Before hang gliding I had a 18' Sol-cat that I would race around in NorCal. These new catamarans and trimarans are amazing! Thanks for the links.

Thanks

Thanks for the heads up Mike. I love the America's Cup!

Here's a little known fact. Did you know that sailboat sails are made from "hang glider" cloth. hahaha

I Sailed Before I Soared

As a kid, I helped our Dad adapt a sail rig from a Sabot daysailer to our canoe. The hull had been stolen and left the rig which we picked up cheap. Most people KNEW we would capsize without a weighted keel, but it never happened and we ended up having a ball. Homemade sideboards and a rudder of sheet aluminum did the trick, and we could step the mast by undoing the U-bolts if we had to paddle out of trouble. Big Bear Lake, Lost Lake, we even pissed off the surfers at San Onofre once. Sailed day sailers from the Navy Marina in Long Beach years later. Sailing has the same attraction of "interaction with the elements" that hanggliding offers, eschewing the drone of internal combustion. Unfortunately for most of us, slip fees and coastal real estate prices prevent it nowadays. If I were single, I would consider the semi-nomadic lifestyle needed to make it affordable, but most aren't cut out for that. Sail on sailor...
work to live, don't live to work

Cool pics of the wing

as it is being lifted onto the boat. Hey Rod the nickname for the boat is Dogzilla. Sound familliar! LOL And yes the Americas Cup boats have been copying our sail technology for years. Ever since WW or was it Moyes who invented Dacron followed by Mylar.

Oracle

I was sailing in San Diego harbor earlier this year and Oracle came out. I just saw it in the harbor, but that is one big boat. It dwarfed all other boats on the water. It will be interesting to see how well it does.
