Latest info on the down paragliderThis is a IM conversation I just had with Michael Neufeld reguarding the Paramystery??? Michael Neufeld: Hey Kenny....youy get my note? Forums > Pilot Reports Paraglider OWNER?Launching Crestline at 11 AM and ending up down in Valley of Enchantment doesn't sound much like a 'pilot' - perhaps this is a guy who owns a paraglider and doesn't have real training. Can anyone think of a CSS member living in VOE? The entrance to the camp is near 34.243154°N, -117.307563°W . I guess if he got up and got blown back a little but too low to make it south, then running downwind for an open area would make sense. Launch, the crash location, and PG-landable schoolyard all lie pretty much on the same line. I'm still betting this is a non-USHPA, non-CSS pilot. I hope he's well. Definitely non-CSSThe only PG pilot in the club roster with a Crestline address is Stephen Nowak, and we _know_ it wasn't him. (Heal well Stephen) Rim Of The World netDoes not give his name in this article either. I live in the Valley Of Enchantment part of Crestline very close to the school yet only 3.1 miles from the launch site. I remember the helicopter searching along playground area, and then later, one taking off from the VOE school with a "critical patient" on board (According to alerts at rim's net) and going to LLUMC. Allow me to be the first to say "It wasn't me"! -Dennis D red dotI have updated the accident page to include this incident with what we know so far. Probably no connection,... but a chap probably between 40 and 50 yrs of age approached me at the Arco station a few weeks ago. He asked if I would buy his paraglider and harness. Conversation led me to find out the wing had been in storage and not flown for a long time so it was probably in good condition. He apparently had tried to fly it by going up to Marshall and watching others launch and then trying to duplicate what he saw. But he couldn't get it to launch. (probably kiting inabilities) He had also been talking to some mountain business that he was trying to make a deal with where he flies back and forth along Hwy 18 near the cliffhanger advertising the business. I can't for the life of me remember what business he spoke of. He asked a bit about paramotors as well. He was guessing the equipment he got was early 90's. Not worth anything to speak of if it was. I surely didn't want to spend any money on it based on his description. My recommendation to him was to forget flying this gear other than to get involved with pilots at the landing area and join the CSS. Get training and only use the gear for kiting at the LZ. Again, perhaps no connection to this incident. But it does have a faint stench of possibilities.
I can hear him ranting toI can hear him ranting to his friends about how this money-grubbing instructor told him it was worthless and wanted him to buy all new gear and lessons. more info just inI heard more info the other day and decided to update the accident page on this incident... |
