Fri 6/26 Pizza Run

Hate to admit it, but I made a Pizza Run landing on my U2
Landed in the Bailout LZ (Shame Of It). Conditions were quite similar to last Friday. Lots of lift and Lots of sink. Launched
at 1:30 wasn;t really soarable at Crestline. One wing was climbing out in front of Billboard. Couldn't find the others that were still in the air. Sunk out making an attempt for Billboard and got lower and lower finally aborting and heading for Regionals.
There found a tight core after scraping the hillsides for at least 20 minutes. Made Crestline twice more eventually climbin g to 1000 over with Joel on his Falcon. Vario quit after about 90 mins. Got really quiet! Decided after two hrs it was time for a beer. Setup landing, but had a hard time finding the sink that had been so abundant. Because I came up a little short on last landing and wind looked the same I left some VG on. Big Mistake.
Went onto final to high tried couple of S turns and found I might make the very end of the field. Decided it was to close and aborted opting for the bailout. Not much fun breaking down while your friends are on Greener Pastures.

Great decision & flare

Jack,

I saw all that from on high and I am about a month from having an easy setup to helmet-cam record all my flights. Your landing was a prime example of why I'd want that.

From my perpespective, I couldn't tell height, but I could tell that you made a textbook end around and and perfect flare in the bailout's bushes.

It was a prime example of not losing cool and flying the wing all the way to the landing.

The LZ at that timeframe was quite interesting. I hit the same hot spot in the corner behind the training hill and had a hard time dealing with the speed I used to get down after that. I saved it with a nice flare (man I love the u2's flare window), but I did see fear in the eyes of the LZ spectators as I yawed right at them.

U2

So far I'm finding the U2 one of the easiest wings I've owned to land. I'm 5 for 5 on flairs. Even if I miss the whole darn field.

Good Call

I've seen a couple of 'edge of the field' flares the last couple of weeks. They all turned out ok, but were within 10 feet of the end. 11 feet longer and they turn out real bad.

I think you made the best call, even if you did have to wait a bit for that beer.

My right wing

It was gusted just as I flared spun me40 degrees and my legs were pumping like crazy....in thin air. Fluky Fri LZ. Plopped down on two feet but I was lucky. Deprived the peanut galery from a W A C K !
