So That’s What White Out Is LikeThe skies never opened up like the weather man predicted for Saturday but dozens of HG’s and PG’s scraped the clouds for hours from Marshall to Cloud to Regionals, and out front too. I got to cloud base around 4700 flying with Mike B and we disappeared into the clouds. After 3 seconds of white out I dove for the ground. Some people love it but it wasn’t for me, especially in a crowded sky. I never saw lift greater than 600 fpm, but it was pretty much effortless soaring. Plenty of air time for all, with Mark and John getting over 3 hours. Mike Z Forums > Pilot Reports guy who fell outta the skyIt was a Spin-O-Rama with a forward surge that had the pilot even with the wing, Then he spun it around a few times and it looked like he almost had it flying again but then it was like watching it in reverse ...... spin and.... Smack, Opps the ground got in the darn way, Glad he is OK. Way out front of MarshallI found an amazing thermal that registered 880 fpm. Put me up from scratching to well above launch in minutes. Lots of good CSS landings today too. Let's go back for more tomorrow! Mike B. fun fun funIt was really fun getting up in the clouds again and it wasn't even that cold up there. Here are some frame grabs from the video I shot today http://www.designbydave.net/blog/2009/06/frame-grabs-from-6-20-09.html -Dave Fun day -Both my Brother and his buddy had great flights with Rob yesterday. Nice lift, some sink, lots of clouds, lots of bags. One inconvenient bag incursion over Marshall yesterday. I was thermaling with either Mark (or maybe Mike Z) low and tight up the house thermal spine. After 2 (or 3) well synchronized left hand turns Mr. excuse me, pardon me, excuse me... bagman flys right through the thermal and our turns which forces me to dive right to get out of his way. Nice- Fortunately there was plenty of lift to find elsewhere. The real bummer was that it was great fun sharing the thermal with a fellow hang. Anyway- the guy was flying a white wing with Orange leading edge. I thought I post just in case this wasn't a one off. Maybe he thought we were ridge soaring in a circle????... Again, nothing dangerous, just inconvenient and inconsiderate. The problem was the XCThe problem was the XC league brought more foreign bags to Marshall. My guess would be Torrey bags. They don't know how to fly with hang gliders and usually just wait for you to do something. An occassional collision avoidance maneuver would be nice, but it's rare. I too had some inconsiderate encounters at Marshall that day, but don't recall the white/orange. Typical thing, I had the hill on my right and encounter a bag who refuses to go down my left side. I'm blazing right at him and he waits for me to do something. My choice is turn uncomfortably close to the hill or bank left in front of him. I'm not typing with my teeth, so I must have banked left. Happened twice with different bags. Are there any French in town? -Stan |

Fun Day
It was nice to have cool all you can eat flying... weekends are a fun treat... where did all these people come from?
With everyone confined to the Marshall vicinity, it was a pretty busy sky, but I found it fun, at one point diving through a wall of 12 PGs all pointed into the wind.
Glad the guy who fell outta the sky had his landing cushioned by bushes, bummer about the poison oak. I'd be interested in hearing more details, after getting that he was okay, I didn't want to pester for too many more details.
Weird weather for June...
