Elsinore, 29 Nov., 08 - Turkey Meet

Mild Santa Anas were forecast, N 10-15 with gusts to 20 (they'd been backing off the strengths for a couple of days. This was good for EHGA's Turkey Meet. In reality it was blowing in lightly ESE, clear and warm for November.

Some wings got above the ridge to the left of Edwards for a few minutes. Most had extended sledders. I launched a Sport 2 155 just after 13:00 into lift and climbed, immediately left of launch, enough to do two passes over launch. Heading north at ridgetop height I hit sink, then mild turbulence a few times on the way out to the road-cut/point. A PG was working the N bowl around the corner and I got a bump way below him, but it wasn't big enough to circle in. A couple of bumps on the way out to the Lake Elsinore Marina LZ, but I didn't circle in them either. Got to the marina with good altitude and threw my bomb heading NW (about 20' from target in the middle of the LZ) and did a right-hand diving approach over the water to head in from the ESE, over a fisherman and a truck. The headwind was just a little more than I thought, so I landed on the outer circle (50'?) with my shoes in the edge of the big puddle.

It didn't blow down until late, a bit before local sunset. A rigid wing did really well late in the day. About half of the paragliders made it to the LZ. A number of pilots, both HG and PG, didn't fly at all. Nobody landed in the water. Wolfie (Wolfgang Seiss, Austrian comp pilot) wowed them with his first landing, swooping in low for his bomb toss then screaming out over the water and dragging a toe in it on the way to a nice flare at the cone. His second landing was more spectacular, with a big long water spray, but he popped up approaching the cone and had to flare high, landing hard on his butt and snapping a tip wand. The crowd loved it. Wolfie got 3rd in the HG division. NMERider Jonathon was 2nd and Doggone Bill Soderquist took 1st. Gene Embry got 1st in the PG div and also got the overall trophy. Mickey ran a great meet and the burgers were good. I don't think there was any tubage. Fun to fly at Elsinore again, fun to land at the marina.

We checked out Everyday Mike's LZ before heading up and while not ideal for HG it certainly looks doable. Only a couple of choices for landing direction and there's only about 30° difference between them. The area is sheltered, so landing crosswind and slightly uphill should work in most situations.

Turkey Meet

Thanks to all for participating. Fun day out even though the flying was sucky. Loads of entertainment, good food and beer.
Loads of story swapping and just good comraderie on a nice day.
My first landing at lake since it flooded in the 1990's.
No problems and it sure is sweet to land on something flat.
Thanks to Mickey, Kelly and everyone else that ran the show.
Monetarily I heard it was a pretty good success.

P.S. Ference you took my Whack Award home with you.

Very Cool!

Nice vid! That's the guy who installed the cell phone repeater in the Sylmar LZ: Sebastion the Atos-inator. It really shows off the amazing sink rate of 120 FPM.

The view from my cockpit

I had a blast! The highlight of the day was chatting at length with Bruce Carr on his daughter's cell phone. We need to pay him a gang-visit. My T2 144 really performed well for me. I'm glad I brought it for my first two flights on it in the benign flying conditions.

My downwind belly landing. Note the shadow of my body position.

LZ at 3:45 PM...........

The restaurant where launching was done back in the '70s......

I'll have video of my flight highlights soon.

Cheers, Jonathan

Fun time, Mickey's the man

Wow, Mickey organized a great meet... lots of fun.

My GPS data shows the Marina LZ at 6.5:1 from Edwards. Definitely not SS territory on a day like yesterday. A few made it, I know of one that did not. The PGs were landing all over like D-Day but looked to be having a fun time, gotta love that quick turnaround... Gene got 3 flights, I think, on way to his Meet First Place.

It was fun to get out for only my second and third flights in a month. I was primed for the rust on the first flight, but loosened up too much on my second and made 3 headwork errors. Bah.

The Marina LZ is a blast. Those approaches over water are very fun.

thx

looked like a nice time. the water skim approach looks way fun too.

Video View from my Cockpit

Here are my first two flights on my T2 144 along with my downwind belly landing including KK's nice still photos, bomb drops, LZ, a view of the restaurant with the sun from behind the hills, etc. Sorry about not taking any LZ videos even though I saw some spectacular landings. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JPtwcpPnTr4

Broken Wrist

Wolfie's got a small broken bone in his wrist after all, so he's in a cast from knuckles to mid-forearm for 3 months. It's one of the tiny bones with poor blood supply, so if it isn't allowed to heal properly now it could be an ongoing problem later. Coincidentally, his cast, courtesy Chris Wills himself, holds his hand in downtube-gripping position :)

Which looks like

An E-Team Claw!

Ouch!

Thanks for the update, Ken. I'll take a downwind belly slide on damp sand over this any day. Wolfie can commiserate with our guest from Phoenix who re-broke his arm on Mt McKenzie a few weekends ago. Luckily this happened off-season so his FAI ranking shouldn't be affected too much. http://civlrankings.fai.org/FL.aspx?a=322&person_id=7961&

And touche, Knumb!

Entertaining

Wolfie!
Entertainment value was great, but injury sucks. Get well and back in air soon.

Injury

I watched the video, I assume the prize for the spot landing contest was of little monetary value, so my question is...Am I the only person that thinks what he did was STUPID?

He broken his tip wand (at least), ended up breaking a small bone (could have been far worse), just to show off.

Give the kid a break

I spent enough time with the lad on that day to know that he's just a kid with lots of exuberance and spunk. I found him to be modest and soft spoken as well. His competition record is excellent for his age and experience and he has consistently moved up in the FAI rankings year after year. I don't think he was showing off as much as he was just enjoying himself when he got a little too enthusiastic. Wolfie's father has 30-years of HG experience and I'm sure he'll counsel him well. I've witnessed plenty of unnecessary errors by pilots twice his age.

Now that I have also flown a T2 144 I can attest that the glider has an awful lot of energy retention which is why I chose to run out my second landing rather than flare hard too soon and zoom up. Eventually, I'll develop enough feel so I can give it a hard flare without zooming.

Cheers, Jonathan

Hey Don

Hey Don, I do not think he meant to climb as high as he did. I bet he was as surprised as anyone else.

Why don't you ask him face to face and get the facts first? Huh?

Mark

zoomin the water

John H. tried to get a pic of his hand in the water years ago. I expect to see more u-tubie action soon. I guess the Marina is back.

censorship

Thanks, John, for saving us from negative vibes. Let's all take our Soma and move along.

Censorship sucks no matter how you rationalize it.

Spot Landings

Spot Landings contests can make even the Best look silly.
2007 Mingus Labor Day Flyin I nailed the target, but to do so I made a last second correction which caused me to whack in at a slight angle. The ensuing damage cost over $300 to repair and my whack was a little more substantial than normal physically
No one called me stupid or anything negative just a competitor. Also saw videos of Spot Landings at Big Springs and alot of Comp Pilots were making some spectacular attempts. It's just part of the experience. Nascar Drivers don't expect to crash, but they do. "It's in the Game" Pictures avail.

A pilot's decision

I think this incident is worthy of a bit of discussion. The pilot in command has to continually make decisions, some quickly and by instinct. Wolfgang did have a decision to make and if you ask him today if he would make the same decision I'll bet he would say "no".

The decision I refer to is whether to fixate on the spot landing target or to abort the spot landing mission in the interest of safety. A pilot of this skill level is able to bring the glider down into ground effect and maintain altitude as speed bleeds off. If a wind gust causes the glider to begin to "balloon", the pilot should instinctively pull in to maintain airspeed and keep the glider at a relatively safe (low) altitude from which to land. I think the reason Wolfgang deviated from maintaining a safer, low altitude is that he made a quick decision to try to hit the spot with a "parachute" landing. He probably didn't expect to have to drop from such a height.

I did this once myself at one of our fly-ins, not from quite as high as Wolfgang, intent on hitting the spot and I'll never try it again. The glider came down hard on the wheels, bent a down tube slightly, and I was left with a bruised leg that had me limping for a while. Not only that but also my potential winning landing a few feet from the cone was disallowed. "You crashed your glider! We can't allow that for a spot landing."

As far as post censoring goes, I'd suggest saving that for something truly profane. If someone's post takes a disagreeable tone, write a rebuttal and tell the author where he is out of line.

I agree with you, John. It

I agree with you, John. It isn't your job to decide how someone expresses themselves. Yet, you did it anyway. How jackboot of you.

fine

Stan,

I'd put it back if I could, all I remember was a slight disclaimer about how everyone is different and "what a MORON."

I deleted my response to you and now am apologizing for crossing boundaries that upset you so much, more I am sure than anyone would have been upset by the original comments.

One a Year Moderation = Censorship?!?

This is a moderated forum, it says so in the intro. John's edit was the first I can recall this year; there MIGHT have been one post removed last year. Hardly merits name-calling and vitriol, Stan. I didn't see the original post. John made a judgment call and I stand by him.

Calling a complete stranger a moron in a public forum where one didn't even witness the event is, well, moronic, but it can be done in a convivial way or it can be done in a mean-spirited way. My understanding is that it was the latter.

To add another data point, Wolfie said that he had made a quick stab at releasing the VG early on (while over the water, I think) but the cord stuck back in the cleat and he didn't feel he had time to mess with it further. He was quite surprised by the amount of headwind as he neared the spot; it had been much lighter as he was setting up. With the VG off he wouldn't have retained nearly as much energy during ground-skim.

Good Flying,
Ken Howells

A rose by any other name

Yes, moderated = censored. Yes, this is a censored forum. Why is that? To make nice-nice to the public? To keep Church Lady from peeing her pants? I just don't like it that one person has the authority to tell another how to express themselves.

Don had a point. He emphasized his point with blunt language. He should have the right to do so.

CSS responsible for content?

This Forum is after all hosted by CSS, we can’t just allow anything. So it seems to me it has to be moderated, moderately, which I trust it has been.

An exception would be political commentary. For example if someone wrote “The CSS Vice President is a pathetic dumb stupid incompetent MORON and should be in jail” I would not only defend to the death his right to post it, I would share his assessment as well.

Mike Z
CSS V.P.

I would censor the *^!)! out of that

I would find such a comment not in order.

SCHHHHHUUULLLLLLLLLLLLTZ!

Lay off

This ongoing banter is'nt making the guy (who can't fly for months) feel any better. You should be thanking him for the entertaiment anyway. And I agree with John, I don't want to see personal attacks here or anywhere else. John Kerry

Basics

Clearly some of us have a different fundamental view of forum moderation. For me, the starting position is that altering someone else's post is an offensive act and should be the resort only in an extreme case such as foul language bad enough to offend a "normal" person, whatever that is. :)

Wolfgang isn't a 12-year-old girl who will be traumatized by some criticism, is he? He isn't a club member and Don is so that should tip the scales toward not altering Don's words, he should own them, and anyone can post a rebuttal if they like.

If someone is a repeat offender with offensive posts (has there ever been such here?) then post altering or removal makes sense. I didn't have the impression that was the case here.

Hasn't Davis Straub been soundly condemned for altering some posts in his (personal) forum? I guess I have thought of this CSS forum as Ken's basically as I thought he did the bulk of the work to make it happen. If that's the case then I'm good with Ken setting the guidelines. Personally I wouldn't edit someone else's post as I view that essentially as a moral wrong. It's not so fun out here in left field. I hope we can fly Sunday.

FFS

FFS, I am sorry. I will never edit someone else's post again. make it stop.

Too Funny

I could care less either way..... Mod or Not...

Just Fly, Soaring Is Pure

2 cents or..

if the poster was at the scene of the whack and standing there face to face, would he have spoken what he felt was fine to bang out on the keyboard at home? I doubt it. he might have gotten his moron ass censored on the spot.
Just emphasizing my point with blunt language.

I thought he was there

{soapbox}

I thought I saw Don there along with a bunch of other Sylmartians, of which I am one. He should have seen Wolfie's landing in person if he was looking. IIFC, Don has been whacking a lot of his landings lately on his LiteSport with his recently acquired backplate harness and he seems to have been grumpier than usual too. Hell if I know why. Since he lives about 5 blocks from me I could go over and ask him, but my plate is already full. Hopefully, his hemorrhoids will clear up.

Since Wolfgang didn't post here about his flight, Don's post cannot be deemed a personal attack according to the rules of good netiquette and forum decorum. It was simply an editorial statement of no special significance. If anything, it would have merely rallied support on the side of Wolfgang.

The only adult authority figure who should have anything to say to Wolfgang should be his father who has 30 years of HG experience. To that end, I tracked him down in Austria and sent an email with a link to the video. When I was Wolfie's age my father had a few things to say about my HG exploits which I respected.

I may be partially responsible for getting Wolfie's fires stoked when I approached him after his first aerobatic display and landing and complimented him on his spectacular performance. He took it very humbly and mentioned that Zippy (Zack Majors) could have done at least as good a landing show. So maybe I should be censured as well as Don for having the temerity to give naches (that's Yiddish for accolades) to Wolfie's face which inspired him to give it another go.

I'd be more concerned with people's conduct on launch and in the air. On the day that Scotty had his crash and I was trying to juggle a 2-meter radio, a cell phone, a group of drunk wuffos, and get the SBFD medi-vac helicopter to him. During this time some flaming asshole HG pilot kept coming up to me and interrupting my communications. Later, when Chiam had broken a tip wand and a downtube, this same crass individual had some choice, biting humous wit to lay on an already somewhat dejected Chiam. The real cous de gras came as I was preparing to launch off the top of Marshall and just when I began my run the stupid fucker, yelled out, "you're going to die"or some equally offensive potentially distracting remark that caused me to abort my launch run. I turned around an made eye contact to give this puke head the message. Then launched without further interruption.

At the CSS board meeting the issue of enforcing club rules was bandied about and I offered to back up Diane, who lamented being stuck in the role of playing the 'bad cop' at Crestline/Marshall. Now, here is where my post goes full circle. If I thought that Don's editorial comments about our guest pilot were likely to interfere with his safe operation of his aircraft for whatever reason, I'd say go ahead and edit it as needed. And if someone were to insult a pilot to his face in a manner that any reasonable person would deem likely to ultimately interfere with the safe operation of his aircraft, I would deal with the matter a little more bluntly.

Let's face it--good natured teasing is part and parcel of being in this sport. In the land of Sylmartians it gets pretty down and personal too, but everyone I've come into contact with just takes it in stride. On the planet Sylmarz there is a different ethos than in the genteel dominion of the 909s. It is possible that it just spilled over into a forum post which has an entirely different effect than when done face-to-face where the other person can see by your facial expressions and speech inflections that it's all just good natured teasing and nothing more. In Don's defense, I would give him the benefit of the doubt and a little of the old shark's fin oil in the pucker factor region of his toches (that’s more Yiddish. Get used to it).

My doorbell just rang and it was my neighbor, Don. He cautioned me to retain one copy of the unedited post for myself and PM another to my lawyer, Stan. {wink}

Freedom of Speech

I, for one, support the right of each of us to make an a** (self-moderated) of themselves.
