Crestline 11/19

Flew Crestline today flying was awesome. Flew for 2hrs 15 mins.
Launched around 1:15 from Crestline. After boating around
for about 40 mins hooked a big fat one at Billboard and climbed to
8500. Passed Mike Zeller on his U2 on the way up. Flew with Jonathon, Mike, Mark and myself. Flew over to Pine with lots of altitude to burn. Didn't seem like much going on back to Crestline. Got back to Billboard with altitude to spare and once again found really good lift. Got above 8000 4 times during flight. 3:15 headed for Marshall. Had a commitment to land by 4.
3:30 circling over LZ spinning off altitude. Made the worst landing I've ever executed at Crestline absolute pilot error. Set up downwind
and base without ever looking at the LZ. Fixated on tree tops
turned final to find I was way to high, but not high enough to go around. No way gonna land on top opted to land on the east of LZ
but the area was protected and glider went into a long glide eventually flairing into the birm at the riverbed. Only quarter of mile overshoot. Second error I should have turned right after clearing end of LZ thus putting me into the bailout LZ. No tubeage, but lots of Crow to Eat. Thanks everyone for a fun day.
Checked Vario 19000 ft total gain in 2 hrs. Not bad for a winter day?

At Least.........

.......You didn't land in dog poop and get chewed out by your Sylmartian buddies online like I did for posting a video of it. That was Mike Blakely on his U2. He may have been a bit overpowered at times today. He's a damn good pilot but he's at the bottom of the range for it.
Let's do it again soon!

Video of Thermalling Technique from 11/19/2008

Yesterday I managed to get my sprog camera set up just right and got to pull my hand-held camera out while I was working a column. I did the best I could with the all the data without getting too obsessed with the project:

High Quality Version: http://vimeo.com/2301580

It's also on YouTube but I can't get the url from my office which blocks that data. I'll post an update after I get home.

For some reason YouTube didn't render a high quality version even though the bit rate was 4KBPS.

Jonathon

Your vid was a whole lot better than mine. Practice makes perfect I'll get it right next time. Fun to listen to the narration
during flight.

Updated edit on YouTube

I made some changes and deleted the YouTube video linked above. The new url is....... http://youtube.com/watch?v=X8M40sx-mLs

Landing

P.S. Your Poopy Landing vid was appreciated by most of us who have
a sense of humor and you learned the correct approaches to
Mikes LZ without any fallout. You lead the way on that
particular flight.
