Scotty's accident and recovery

I want to share what I learned about Scotty's accident (Saturday Nov 8 around 1:30pm)...

I met Scotty at the Loma Linda hospital.
According to himself, he stalled his wing at 50' over ground trying to land on a clearing.
He was using extra braking to degrade his glide towards his selected LZ.
My guess of the location is: 34 deg 9.200 min North, 117 deg 12.299 min West.
Or view under Google Earth with: http://www.expandingknowledge.com/tmp/2008_11_08_Scotty.kmz
Which is about 1.3 mile ENE of the San Manuel casino.

His injuries were described as:
- Broken left wrist
- Broken left elbow
- Broken left shoulder
- Broken pelvis on both sides.
- Lost feeling in left hand fingers.
Around 6 pm he was going into surgery for his left arm, and his pelvis would later be operated on Monday.

Get better soon Scotty, you are in my thoughts,
Jerome

PS. Please post in this topic more news on Scotty's recovery.

"Beam Me Up" - Scotty

Jerome,
Thank you for the update and being such a good Boy Scout. You earned your merit badge today. It's little wonder that Scotty didn't want to move himself after he crashed with the pelvis fractures. I'm glad to know he doesn't have a spinal injury.

Did Scotty say anything about having somebody recover his motorcycle from Marshall launch? Did he have any comments on the medivac helicopter? Ironically, my friend Sambo told me on the cell phone while driving up today--not to end up like Steve Fossett, and this happens. If Scotty had a GPS, he may have given you his coordinates and made the rescue a lot easier. I could have gotten off the phone to SBFD 30 minutes earlier and gotten at least that much more air time. LOL.
Cheers, Jonathan "I'm right over you"

More Kudos

I was up on Marshall while Jonathon attempted to get help to Scotty over the cell phone and radio. He was really calm amid the confusion of not being able to locate Scotty's exact location, multiple folks reporting in via radio, 911 on the cell, and a crowd of on-lookers at launch.

Jerome, Bob, Lisa and Jonathon probably got help to Scotty hours earlier than might otherwise have happened (seems like a thread on the importance of radios is in order).

Big kudos to the 911 and Sheriff teams too. They got that chopper in the air ASAP! Imagine doing this kind of stuff every day (NOT!).

Let's all hope for Scotty's speedy recovery.

- Alan

thanks

thanks for the update guys

Get better soon Scotty

Scotty Update

Greetings All,

I went to visit Scotty yesterday (Sunday 11/9) at Loma Linda. He looked good, all things considered. He was not scratched up or visibly bruised. He was pretty groggy and out of it. By then, he had completed his shoulder surgery. Today he is undergoing surgery for his pelvis. The concern is for his nerves in his left arm. He has a compound elbow and compound wrist fracture. This is what is interferring with the feeling in his fingers. Time will tell as to the extent feeling will return.

He was still very excited about his cross country flight and how far he made it (with the exception of the end, of course).

I have spoken to many of you and I would like to thank everyone that has participated in trying to help out. Rob and Dianne successfully retrieved his motorcycle from launch. To those that participated in the rescue effort you are also to be commended. I will post any more information I have as it becomes available.

Warm Regards,

Joe Popper

Thanks for the update!

Please give Scotty everyone's best the next time you see him. We're all concerned. I'm glad that he's thrilled with his distance flown Saturday. Tell Scotty that I have nominated him as the club's poster child for ham radio proficiency.

Scotty Update

Just got off the phone with Scotty! He is finally out of intensive care and out of Loma Linda Hospital. He has been moved much closer to home and now has a private room at the Country Villa Healthcare Center in Rancho Mirage, very near the Eisenhower Medical Center. He is now up to seeing visitors or receiving calls between 8am and 8pm, and expects to be at the center for the next 1-2 weeks. The address is 39950 Vista Del Sol and the phone number is (760) 340-0053, or use his cell number. He has a long way to go to full recovery, but is just glad to be back on solid food at this point! He does have the story of his cross country escapade to tell!
