seeing thermals in our future?using laser technology http://www.oads.com/programs/vindicator 50 lbs is a bit heavy for a hang glider or paraglider, but maybe in the future it could be made lighter and smaller. 300 meter distance is pretty good, but i'd like to see 1000 meters or more. we're living in the future! Forums > Theory & Practice Flight > Equipment Static MountInteresting stuff. It sounds like a wind speed/direction indicator with a mount fixed to a stationary object. Do they make a model that would adjust for the movement of an aircraft?
helmet mountMark, the sensors will be helmet mounted. You will then just scan the horizon and it will beep when it is pointed at a thermal. Of course you won't need one as you can already smell them. What about...After I had flown for a few years I realized that I can sometimes hear thermals. Maybe those are the small fast-moving ones that make a localized "whooshy" sound. Sometimes I'll hear that sound off to one side, turn in that direction and there it is. So if you could devise a directional, amplified hearing device, you could scan the vicinity for that elusive little thermal. |

Bugger the weight
I'm not as concerned with the weight as much as: "how are we going to carry the frikkin' sharks?"
