Friday October 17, 2008 - Over the backLaunched at noon, started sinking but then got up to 8000' between Marshall and Crestline. Wind was light but SSE, so I thought going "over the back" would be more interesting than battling a headwind towards the dam. Glided to Pine and there go up to altitude again before crossing to Lake Silverwood and the desert. Max altitude of 8500', but the nice part was the thermal were soft-edged, stayed high and kept many landing options, and the air was very clear (see pictures). 20 mile flight to Hesperia. Then got a fast retreive (thank you!) and made it back in time for a round trip from Marshall to Crestline, Pine and back to the LZ. Forums > Pilot Reports Flight > PG · XC · GPS Track Sites > Marshall News > 2008 · Local Flying · Comp & XC Nice Autumn ConditionsGood flying Jerome! Nice save Jonathan! It was blowing SE 12-15 at Marshall at 11:00. Scratchable but no great climbs. Mostly S at the LZ. At noon it was going from SE flow to SW in thermal cycles. Solidly soarable and the thermals were drifting to the NW quickly. At 14:00 steadier SW and the thermals were going straight up, 300-800 FPM. Extended W-NW cycle at the LZ while I was preparing for approach but it turned SW as I started 'downwind'. Ran it out after a long straight south final. Pretty active air for PGs that flight, based on later discussion. At 16:30 it was glassing off with small clumps of clouds drifting in high from the west. Had a nice slow climb from the 750 area to 4600 at Marshall Peak. GPS track images and flight gory details on my website. Good Flying, |

I couldn't get it up in time
Great flying today, Jerome! Excellent photos too.
I met Jerome and Lisa at noon. My Glider was assembled but it took a while to get my harness loaded and instruments ready. I watched Jerome launch and sink out, but then I saw him hook a nice thermal from about 600' below launch and then he skied out. I launched from the shallow upper slope which saved my upper back from the strain of walking down to the lip. I made the fatal error of heading for the thermal to the left of launch which only got me up about 400' above. I headed towad Cloud where Rob and another WW factory pilot snagged some good lift then sank out to 900' below launch. I was ready to throw in the towel when I caught a nice bubble that allowed me to work my way over toward Billboard and then over to Pine. I was listening to Jerome on the radio telling Lisa he was thinking of heading to the desert if he could get back up to 8,000' again. That was the last visual contact I had with him. I got to 7,250 over Pine but it was cold and very turbulent. I went weightless several times. I decided not to pursue trying to catch up to Jerome and then hitch a ride with them back to my car which was parked on Marshall. I used the rest of the flight for badly needed practice and landed after 2:11.
I'm glad Jerome contacted me to hook up and play cat & mouse in the sky. Maybe next time!Marshall 10-17-2008
