Father's Day

Nice day. My daughter, FSU and dog all took me flying. Hot, humid, but a little too cool for only a T-shirt at altitude. We launched from Crestline, above the forecasted inversion. We all were mostly hanging around 5800, but I bumped up to 6200 several times and max'd at 6600. I flew to Marshall to warm up. It was nicely soarable and only marred by a bag flying staight at me with no effort to turn away. How does it happen that a pilot gets all the way to a tandem instructor rating, I assume, without figuring out you take traffic down your left side. Possible scenario's come to mind. He's French, enough said. He's some other form of asshole. He's a product of Uncle Jebb's puppy, err... panty mill. He's a relatively new pilot with a big wing, no rating and no skills.

Lots of PGs Don't Know the LZ Pattern Either

I hung out at the LZ for a couple of hours late in the day. I observed at least five PGs do their 'approaches' from the East, landing on the East side of the LZ. I spoke to one who landed just after an HG came in using a standard left hand approach. The PG pilot said "I looked around and there were no HGs." What about the one that started just above him and did his downwind leg east and under him? He also said "Well, I couldn't even get to the West side of the LZ." Whose fault is that?

PG regulars and instructors - you need to clue in the visitors to the approach patterns and get people to make it a habit to use the proper pattern, which includes getting to the LZ high enough that you have choices.

right hand

its a rarity to see ANY pg do a right hand aircraft approach. must be a p5 signoff. way up there with right of way. wait, Jebb taught them his own version of pg right of way. torrey style. Give em a break Stan, he was probably too busy "active piloting" to be aware of his surroundings. bwa

No Rating? Whats he doing

No Rating? Whats he doing flying there? Other than your near miss
sounds like you had a good Fathers Day, I know I did. No excuse
for not being aware of traffic while in landing pattern. Kevin and I were making a simultaneous landing on Friday. We both tried to
lose altitude quickly to get below the other. Once I realized what he was doing I found lift and thermalled long enough for him to land and clear the target.
