Marshall, Saturday June 7

Interesting day. It was blowing over the back at Crestline in the morning.

1st flight:
Launched at noon and could see 15 km/h NE wind on my GPS when at 6k (maxed at 6120'). Lift was smooth and visibility towards the desert was clear (see picture), but not a good wind direction for going XC to the East. After an hour, the smog came in and it wasn't as nice.

2nd flight:
I re-lauched a little before 4pm and there was not much lift at Marshall at that time but plenty of West wind. Made it to the other side of Cloud and then found a thermal forcing its way through the wind. Around 5pm it got sweet and got altitudes near 6k again. Did the round trip to Crestline, Pine and back again to top land Marshall. I saw at least one other PG reach Pine.

Fun day with lots of people I enjoyed seeing again.

keller and cajon

met with dusty and rebar at 9 am to help add new shelves to the storage container. then got a ride to crestline on the noon o'clock mcbus.

a gentle 8 mph breeze from the south southeast greeted me on launch at 1:10 pm. climbed immediately to 6k and headed east. at the turnout, i got a little low, so headed back to crestline launch. trying to see if i could convince gene to join me, i headed back to the east and found a beauty at rock and roll corner to 6,200.

no sign of gene, so i headed out and got to 6,300 at strawberry peak. then 6,500 a mile east of the high school. it took me three tries to get established at santa's village to make a bid for running springs.

over the 330 in running springs, i found a nice fat thermal that took me to 7,500 feet and an easy glide across the gap and above the big "r" on the hill.

again to 7,500 i headed to keller peak. arrived about 800 feet below the summit. a white knuckle climb up the face of keller, pulled me up to 8,400 feet.

knowing the west winds were on their way, i wanted to head back soon. i waved goodbye to all the folks hanging out at the lookout station on keller peak, and headed west.

a stop again in running springs, then again at rock and roll, then pine, then sugar pine, then cajon had me as far west as i cared to venture.

back to crestline to complete the double out and back, and then past marshall on my way to the lz.

loads of folks in the air, and the lz. so nice to see familiar and new faces all hanging out sharing stories.

Fun Day

A very fun day indeed. Launched around 4:30 pm Marshall to find sparse lift getting flushed to the beehives in front of regionals. finally at around 2000 MSL I found a nice fatty that took me up over cloud.
Boated about cloud with several hangs and a couple of pgs. After getting high enough to feel comfortable for a run to crestline I drifted back only to find sink which left me low at the pipe at the base of the billboard spine. Searched around the pipe and the surrounding spines only to find very light lift; enter the freight train to 500 over billboard.
Made the run to pine to find the same in the west facing bowls and Jerome up high leaving on glide for billboard, knew it wasn't a good sign to see Jerome leaving. Eventually she gave one up and off to regionals finding lift the whole way, arriving high over the LZ. Good to see everyone. More to come on the sequence of events over the LZ.

A great day at Marshall

I arrived at launch at 12:30 and launched at 1:00 flew the house thermal to 5500' msl. I went back to Crestline with Dave Beardslee. Not much there and knowing the west winds were to pick up, I headed back to regionals. Was about to head to Pine when I got a phone call that I needed to top land and drive the truck down. I went back to Marshal low. I had to work very light lift for a half hour to get back up to launch level for a nice top landing.
Flew with Jerome over Cloud for a long time. Thanks Jerome.
