3-10-2008 Got High. but not far.

I was having an early lunch with Kathy when I looked around and realized its not blowing north.
Then the thought hit me.
The Epic flying days are found in March/April or September/October just as the Santa-ana season is starting or ending.
These are the best times to “Call in Sick”
As Im heading to launch I know I left my camera at home, My GPS has dead batteries, And I don't have change for the city bus. ($1.35 X 2 transfer to Cal-State)

Got high over Marshall and decided to head for the dam. When I arrived at mount McKinley I found nothing and was slowly sinking toward the reservation security in the foothills. I was thinking this wasn't my goal. So I side hill landed about half way up the mountain. Then hiked my gear up to a better launch and waited for a cycle.

I launched into the only lift I could find and ridge soared till it petered out. This gave me the opportunity to not land in the reservation but in the near by vacant Serrano junior high.
Nice!
Made dam sure I didn't cross over the 15 ft fence into Patton State mental hospital (next door). I can hear it now. “No really Im just a visitor. Yes, I did fly here all by my self ”

As I touch down I turn around to see a fire truck roll up to the school, then an ambulance, school police and two security cars from the reservation.
I'm thinking what next?
I then thanked each group individually all the while explaining that for safety concerns I was forced to perform an emergency landing on this empty playing field and this was not my planed destination.

At the end of all this, the reservation security told me it was ok if I had landed in the rez and they would have given me a ride.

Who knew?
It was a good day anyway

spring air

very nice indeed. at 75 behind marshall had to pull out the gloves.north wind above 6k made for some rough climbs and bumpy glides when crossing through the shear layer. best bronco climb 82 out at the cajon tower. hang on tight. landed after 4 in a 5 west. very nice considering a murky semi sled last saturday.
