Flying 3/8/08 "A Little Lesson in Humility"

Pretty fun day with lots of hang gliders and a few paragliders launching from Marhsall. I got an hour and 40 minutes after sweating out the first 15 min at 500 below launch along the spine that extends south from Marshall. While I scratched about I looked up at a train of hang gliders that had formed on launch, apparently watching me in disgust. When I finally got a couple hundred feet higher than Marshall the waiting gliders started launching. They were probably thinking “If that moron is up it must be good now.”
Dave said he found lift everywhere but I was struggling a lot of the time. I would see gliders high at Cloud but when I got there they were high at Marshall. When I'd go to Marshall they were high at Cloud. I was forced to abandon my theory that soaring is largely luck based, and that instead there is skill involved after all. This was very distressing.
Mark and Stan got back to Billboard and then to Pine. And Dusty went to Billboard in a paraglider. Dusty and I were pretty low below Regionals and got into a big moderate moving thermal together that took us up above 5000. I briefly thought of floating back to Billboard myself but soon gave it up. I watched in humiliation as Dusty was still 200 ft. below me but half way there already. He doesn't even use a vario. Once there he worked his way up nicely. At one point he turned around and did the "Nah, Nah Nah, Nah Nah" thing, you know, where you stick your thumbs in your ears and wiggle your fingers in an effort to look like a mocking moose. But the joke was on him because I was so far a way I could pretend not to see it. Probably stuck his tongue out too. "Look ma, no vairo!"
I felt it was time to end the flight.
There was gentle warm soft air in the LZ and a nice sea breeze to land in. Happy pilots seemed oblivious to my tribulations.

Got to glide alongside Stan

In my PG flight I got to glide along Stan from Crestline to Pine and then followed him back. I wasn't as fast, but that gave me more time to enjoy it.

Over the radio, we could also hear some over-excited Soboba boys.

Fun day.

Soboba

Yep Jerome, it was an exciting day at our hill too! Two hour flights to 5k, and the first day of the year my hands weren't frozen. Even Scotty had a great flight for as late as he was in launching, after his flights at Marshall.

We often hear you guys on the radio but that's the first time I've gotten an answer back. The skip must have been working!

RE: Flying 3/8/08

Beautiful air, and lift seemed pretty well spread out. Not using a vario yet, but got close to a half hour, and got a little more accustomed to working consecutive 360's. Working a little closer to the face of the mountain I noticed I had a visual reference to judge my altitude gain when I hit lift. Damn! This just keeps getting better. Gotta get out that new vario, and learn to put it to work. My daughter kindly took time to come down and shoot some pix of me airborne and landing. She shot a lot of other pilots, too, so I'll look through them and pick out any outstanding examples to post to the forum. The icing on the cake was my awareness and focus for landing. Ready to turn onto base, I realized I was a bit high and fast, so I bailed out into a downwind 220, converted to upright, and returned to Mother earth with a strolling 3-stepper. So much nicer than green knees. Yeehah!! Best flight yet Joel work to live, don't live to work

a good day

I got 1 hour 37 minutes, all thermal lift in the Ultrasport. Lift everywhere, easy to stay up, although I spent most of the flight looking up at the pack. Starting to feel pretty comfortable on that glider. I was turning in tight next to the hill to catch lift. Landing went well. Lots of fun yesterday!
