Big Sur Video of JW and DaveHey all, Dave and I had a fun flight at Big Sur last weekend that I got on Hi Def. The youtube version is here: The torrent for the hi-def version is here: The more that download that torrent, the faster it goes. As always, you can download a bittorrent client at: www.utorrent.com Dave's got all our source videos from the weekend and will be doing a more comprehensive video shortly. The weather was good, the food hot and bountiful, the beer cold, the skies smooth, and the campsite not nearly full. We missed a lot of guys who were on the fence but didn't make it. I found out the limitations of my minivan, specifically, the low clearance of the transmission oil pan. Fortunately, the driver for that round (on the way down, I punctured it on the way up) was Gary Powell, who is a race car engineer. He got it to Highway 1, pulled over, hitched a ride, got his truck, towed the Quest back to camp, drove me into Morro Bay the next day, helped me pick out repair materials, patched the pan with JB Weld, dried the epoxy with his camp heater, and the next day filled 'er back up for an uneventful trip back home. What could have been a $3,000 dinger was a mere $300 entry on the John Wright Tax Ledger. The John Wright Tax is the tax I pay for being stupid with cars, but is well counterbalanced by all my other good fortune. Some of us got 5 flights, others relaxed and got fewer, but nobody got rained on. There were some eteamers and other pilots from hanggliding.org on the hill. Thanks, Gary, for saving my butt on the vehicle front. Thanks, Mike, Mike, Gary, Alan, Dave, & Mark Z for the blast of a weekend. JW aka KK Forums > Pilot Reports Flight > HG Sites > Elsewhere fun timesThe trip was a blast and I would love to do it again. Next year same time? I have John's high-def video seeding from a super fast connection so it should download in less than an hour for most. Take the time to get the HD version, its worth the wait. I am working on a mini documentary for the weekend. Should be pretty cool, but it will take some time to get it all together. Have Patients -Dave Next yearBased on what I learned this year, next year I will: 1. Not feel compelled to reserve the group site... there were plenty of spots available in the normal sites, plus launch aint half bad. That gives an out if weather is forecast not to be spectacular. 2. Drive an SUV or pickup, if I drive at all... LOL. Looking forward to the video, Dave. While waiting for Dave's documentary...While Dave takes all our source files and comes up with another great vid of his, here are a few screen caps of some flights. The last one shows the weakness of screencaps from these videos, the interlaced frames look like crap on items in motion.

Thanks!
Thanks to John for setting this whole event up. Somehow he picked a clear and flyable weekend 10 full months in advance! Also had the goods on the best campsite in the place. And the faithful (if somewhat abused) Quest carried an entire warehouse of supplies for our little expedition (was there anything left in the Costco when you pulled out, or did they just close for the weekend??).
Big thank you to Mike B for the ride. We crammed 4 guys, their flying and camping gear, into his Blazer. Thanks to Mike Z for his driving assist and to Dave for not throttling the lot of us during the frictionless bicycle discussions :-)
Great time at a gorgeous spot to fly!
