Chilly but Fun Sunday 1-20-08Windy and cold at Crestline. Lots of HGs made good one or two step launches and then rode the elevator up. All along the ridge gliders were parked into the wind where they pleased but managed to penetrate when they wanted to. Many thanks to Alan Crouse who spent hours in the gusty cold making sure everyone got off the hill. No one turned down help on the wires. Stan estimated the wind was 20 gusting to 25 at one point. Mike Z Forums > Pilot Reports AmenYea, I don't care what you guys say about Alan, he's OK with me! Whack got his first flight on a rigid... got that on video. D by D got in a good flight on an ultrasport... only saw him above and/or behind. Mark Sorensen got in a good last flight before leaving for Abu Dabi. Ken Howells was on one of many red and blue Falcons, but it's easy to spot his: it's the only one that can top land at Marshall without leaving a crater. Parking, cars and gliders, was full at Crestline. When I launched, I held onto the downtubes longer than on an other flight, including my first solo. "Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee" is the rated G version. I left Crestline at 6,300, arrived Marshall at 4,300. I was looking for a Japanese aircraft carrier to bomb, found only PGs and the aforementioned Ken folding his wing. As Bill would say, it was colder than Hillary's side of the bed. Actually, that day in Dec. when Rebardan did slaloms through the clouds was colder. But, people held on for quite a while and there were quite a few purty wings and smiling pilots in the LZ. What was up with the two guys pushing minibikes through the LZ when I was on approach? Last time I landed, Steve Corbin was standing right there. This time, I thought I had accidentally hit Steve's... err.. "stash". Seriously, thanks to Alan for helping us all launch and especially for driving my Turbo Quest back down the hill. Yeah!I second the thanks to Alan, he helped me too. A very good day was had by all as far as I could see. Cold is what stopped my fun, danged fingers feeling pain again. Have to improve on that when wanting to fly in winter. a fun day indeedYes a super great day. Thank again to Alan for helping me setup and launch the ultrasport. I had a blast. -Dave |

Just What the Doctor Ordered
A two-stepper at 14:45 with my Falcon from the top of Marshall into a 1:1 climb to several hundred over, a trip to Crestline, a save from above the 750 to 5300 in one thermal, back to Crestline again (on the second try), 5900 at Billboard, over to the west side of Devil Canyon and back to the top of Marshall. A fun 1:15 of airtime. Not really all THAT cold - I forgot to wear my hood and my face didn't freeze!
My first flight in a month, which is my longest break in quite a while. Good to see everybody. There were three of us blue LE / red BS Falcons at Crestline for a while. That was kinda' cool.
Good Flying,

Ken Howells
