Marshall, Sat. 1-12-08

The air was hardly moving in any direction. We were out biking up the dirt road; I didn't fly. A few pilots had extended sledders early in the afternoon and then some others were soaring to several hundred over. Looked like Dusty and Marcello at least had longish flights. We threw Dexa off Marshall around 1530 for her first PG flight in a couple of years.

Ahh Yes, Ive been caught.

Early in the day I got two of my cars smog checked.
I have already gone through what seemed like two root canals back to back. And was hoping for a flight.

I show up at launch in time to watch a grip of pilots fighting the fact that a sled ride was all that was available today.
I launched fully knowing my fate. I sort of ridge soared clinging to any bump I can find.
In front of the windsock there is an area of really weak lift that seems to be growing, so I hang out. It took 20 mins until I was 50 feet over launch Woo Hoo!
In 30 mins I could see the valley behind Crestline. My guess is 1500 over Marshall.
For the last 500ft the drift in the thermal felt like north wind. So I stayed there till it turned from zeros to sink and I was over the paintball field. I felt very lucky to have any kind of flight at all and it turned out to be big. Who knew?
I flew south to little mountain and then back to the LZ with enough altitude to do some nice spirals.

One of the other pilots up there with me was Marcello’s student (maybe 2nd solo)
Yah he’s ruined
