Don't Compute Before the Caffeine Takes Effect

Simba the weather station needs an occasional reboot, for reasons I haven't determined. Yesterday morning I found that it had stopped uploading weather data and logged in to issue the reboot command. I had had my morning espresso, but it hadn't had time to hit the adrenal glands yet. I kind of automatically typed the 'shutdown -h now' command because I've used that on my laptop several times in the last week when I was done using it. That command halted the system. What I should have sent was 'shutdown -rn now', which would have rebooted the system. Doh! I'm guessing the Balls are out of town for the holidays and that's why they haven't cycled the power manually, as I requested by email.

Entirely my fault that the weather station is down just when we need it most. Sorry.

FWIW, looks like strong Santa Anas again for New Years Day...

Not only that...

Ken, the NWS weather link for Crestline is down also, stuck at last Thursday, a week ago. I emailed the NOAA webmaster...who may be back when? :)

hmmm...

Before I research the bejebu outta this, would a remote reboot via
a 802.11 link and an IP-rebootable powerstrip help head off this one at the pass?

Instead of hassling the occupants, or incase they are not reachable, drive by and connect to the LAN via wireless, telnet into the power strip, reboot....

Q&D search finds this:

Throw in a wireless router, we're talking about 300 clams.

You could probably put the wireless access point on the same subnet as the server, so, assuming the internet at the house is up and the server isn't, you wouldn't even have to drive by.

My ISP hooked me up to one of these for my server at 1 Wilshire and I weep with joy when I cold boot my websites with a few taps on the keyboard.

That's a promising idea,

That's a promising idea, John. I'll look into it.

Yes!

Thanks for the long-awaited reboot Ken. :)
This is the first place I check.

Thanks Ken

Thanks Ken,

You've earned a raise.

Woops. You're a volunteer, you say?

Okay, a cold beer in the LZ will have to do.
