Nicolas Cage Wants to Hang GlideRemember about a year+ ago they were filming a movie at the Cliffhanger restaurant on Hwy 18? Well, that movie was "Next" with Nicolas Cage, Julianne Moore, and Jessica Biel. I rented the DVD because it sounded good and I wanted to see how recognizable the Cliffhanger was. Any pilot who's flown over it a time or two will recognize it from many angles. Fun to see. It's a pretty good sorta-sci-fi action flick, based on a story by Philip K. Dick (which I haven't read). Other movies based on PKD stories or novels are "Blade Runner", "Total Recall", and "Minority Report" - I've got a dozen PKD novels on my bookshelf so it's no surprise that I liked the movie. But that's not what prompted me to write about the movie. In the first "Making of ..." part of the special features section on the DVD, Nicolas Cage is describing this stunt where he jumps off the edge of the Cliffhanger's parking lot into thin air (wearing a harness and wired to a crane) and he says "...and I always wanted to be a hang glider, so it was sorta my first step towards that direction." I like it when stars you've always thought were cool turn out to actually be cool. They were up there for a couple of months at least and had to have seen some hang gliders and paragliders flying around. All Mr. Cage has to do is get hooked up with Rob McKenzie of High Adventure or Joe Greblo of Windsports and he could at least partially fulfill his dream by taking a tandem hang glider flight from the mountains, or maybe some solo training hill flights with a Condor. That'd be really cool. Forums > BS (Banter Section) Partial Recall?Total Recall (1990) Based on "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale" by Philip K. Dick See: http://www.philipkdick.com/films_intro.html -------------- I've always figured it would be better to avoid direct publicity if a famous person were to fly - just let 'em have fun like anyone else. Scanner DarklyI gotta go find my copy now or else admit I'm losing it...If Scanner was close to the book then it's an absolute rarity in the film business, especially where SF is concerned. Always a good thing to find another SF buff. You're probably right about letting a high profile face just have some fun. Then he might be inclined to come back, who knows? Piers AnthonyIt turns out that Piers Anthony wrote the novelization of the movie 'Total Recall', which was originally based on a PKD short story. So you can go back to trusting your synapses. Well... Invite himKen, If you are brave enough to have "Hang Glider Test Pilot" on your business card (metaphorically speaking), you are brave enough to invite NC to a tandem flight. There's gotta be a way to cut through the clutter and reach him with the invite. Crazier things have happened, especially if half of what I've read about him are true. heck, I'll even grill up some brats for the occasion. Cliff Hanger...I dove the S.....out of them one afternoon, and later that week talked to a couple of them about the hang glider that made the FLY BY... they remembered it VIVIDLY, they really loved it! Very funny watching several of them hit the deck, WHACK! |

Hang gliding news for Nov.20: |
Nick Cage
He definitely would be a high profile face to add to the ranks of hang gliding, and might provide a tremendous boost to membership. I think "Total Recall" was a Piers Anthony story, however, I've been wrong before. Maybe you could write to him (or to his agent)and offer him an opportunity to come out for a tandem ride one day, without alerting the papparazi nazis. If he let us take pictures, it could be a huge PR score, for the club, and for the sport. On the other hand, he might appreciate some low-profile fun, or be inspired to plug the sport in the media.
