sand cityI was in monterey this last weekend for a business trip and i was able to bring my wing with me. i went to sand city which has some dunes along the coast. the wind was too strong saturday 17 to 27 west and only 1 hang glider flying. saturday i went again and at first the wind was very cross but there is a small bowl at the training hill that i was able to make short flights on. after each flight i would kite my wing back up the sand dune and then relaunch again. after the third or forth launch i was able to soar a little ridge to the left of launch and actually stay up. then the wind started shifting more west and i got enough height to cross a gap in the ridge and actually flew all the way to marina beach where the hang glider launch is. ( its about 7 miles ) the whole flight i was a little nervous as i had a very short time to get back to my hotel and check out and get my afternoon flight home but luckly i didnt sink out and made it all the way to marina where i was able to call the hotel shuttle to come and get me. very fun site, i may have only flown for an hour or so but i was very happy that i got in the air when all over so cal it may have not been flyable. and also it was my birthday which made it even more special. this site is somewhat unpredictable and doesent allways work but as i found out when it does work its really fun. I unfortunetely had my camera in the back of my pack as i thought i would just be kiting and so no pictures. Forums > Pilot Reports Flight > PG Sites > Elsewhere |
