Dunlap Road Trip - Sept 21 - 23rd - Fun Hang Gliding site

Hey all,

I'm going up to Fresno the weekend of 9/21-23 to fly Dunlap.

My old man has a vacant house (err actually a friend is staying there) that is available about 45 minutes from the LZ. There is also decent camping at the LZ.

I've flown there once and it's a bit dicier than our LZ at Andy Jackson. So, the LZ land owner asked that everyone be at least a Hang 3 on this trip, and he may want to look at the logs of the less experienced of us. As far as PGs, I am under the impression that it's not a good PG site for various reasons.

I'll be driving the emasculated Quest, which can carry 5 pretty comfortably. Another car for retrieves would be nice. Ideally, we'd leave Friday morning, fly Friday evening, Sat morn & evening, & Sunday morning, coming back Sunday afternoon/evening.

Reply here or email me at knumbknuts % gmail.com if you are interested.

Here's a video of a hazy day there.

The weather in Sept. should be dry and a little less volatile (in terms of thermals) than the dead of summer.

Oh, as far as cost, food and gas.

PG Comp at Dunlap

You won't be lonely there. The Northern California Cross Country League is holding a competition at Dunlap that weekend. Expect about 25 PG pilots. If you're interested in XC, find out what the tasks are, and join in. I'm sure they can use a few wind dummies, err, I mean, wind technicians.

OK

I would like to join and learn about Dunlap. Maybe next year I can get my sister to host us overnight at their "cabin" at Shaver lake. The "cabin" is a bonafide two-story log house.

tollhouse

on the way to shaver lake is another site called tollhouse. i know a couple locals there who know where the hang glider landing area is.(not the paul splan pg area). email me and i'll hook you up.

tollhouse is even better

tollhouse is even better than dunlap, but the LZ land owner is a bit finicky, acc. to the Dunlap LZ owner.

A friend of mine was climbing Tollhouse Rock years ago when he heard a voice behind him. Not exactly what a rock climber expects. He looked back and saw a hang glider cruising by.

Dunlap LZ owner charges nothing, just takes donations for lawn mower gas. BTW.

Shaver cabins are nice. The real estate there has gone through the roof.

Also, in the summer, there is a super fun, low place called Sky Harbor, where the afternoon glass off kicks in about 3 and it's wonder lift till sunset, about 2K over launch. I don't think it will be rolling this sept., but I will fly there some day!

It'll be fun to have ya along, Mike. Let's see if we can get you 5 flights there ;).

Tollhouse - HG landing area

I would like to know who to contact, other than Paul Splan.

Thanks,
Don

count me in

I want to check it out, shouldn't have anything more important that weekend.

Dunlap

Dunlap is fun - I was there Saturday 8/11. Got to over 7K. The LZ could be "interesting" trying to land a HG with 20-25 PG making approaches at the same time.

I'm not sure the PGs use the

I'm not sure the PGs use the same LZ. I saw a few land there, but am under the impression that they may be using a different one...

At Dunlap PG uses a school

At Dunlap PG uses a school stadium as primary landing zone, but usually we landing along the course to goal.

This weekend August 18-19 will be next SFBA XC league comp at Tollhouse. More info here: www.sfbapa.org

Is any PG interesting to join me?

Tollhouse

Is there anyone I can contact about HGing Tollhouse? Interested in the obvious, where exactly is it, access to launch & LZs, other concerns, and local pilot assistance.

Thanks

Tollhouse info

LZ is privet property and owner is HG pilot. Last time he also fly with us and made goal. Road to launch is for 4WD truck only and there is also a gate, so it's better to join somebody who know the code.

Bump... update

Ok,

As it stands, we have 3 of us so far, as Mike B, Everyday David A, and I will be leaving Mike B's house Friday morning, to try to get in at least one flight Friday avo. Then, we should get two flights Sat and one Sunday before coming back late Sunday night.

There is some talk of others coming late Friday or early Saturday.

Mike, who has nearby family, and I, with local friends, are trying to scare up drivers to ensure maximum flight time.

John, I may be in, but

John,

I may be in, but won't know for a few weeks or so. I have several customer projects that are all due around that time. I'll also be willing to drive so we have a second vehicle.

Quote; "Everyday Dave" .....how appropriate a name. "LOL"

Dunlap... the final post

Right now, we've got my van full with Mike Z, Mike B, and Everyday Dave, leaving Mike B's house around 9:30 or so Friday morning.

FWIW. For What It's Worth.

Pop's house, while simply the abode of a Cal State prof, can hold about 7 in reasonable comfort. While the Hoover High Swim Team once set the bar at 22 on an all-nighter in '84, the respondents so far are older, bigger, and significantly less attractive than at least of half those 22 (co-ed team).

From here on out, to spare this forum the continued minutia of planning this trip, just email me directly at jsw ~at~ johnwright ddddot com if you plan on coming.

Gary, hope you can make it. We can figger something out if it's 5. Long story, but I can throw another seat in the van easily.
