geoladders.com offers hang gliding (beta)geoladders.com is an amazing resource for mountain bikers. if you ride, and haven't checked it out yet, you must. among other things, the site offers turn by turn and gps directions to just about every mountain bike ride in southern california. amazing. the creator's brother is a hang glider pilot from wisconsin, and has visited crestline a couple times over the past three years or so. recently, geoladders started a new section dedicated to hang glider and paraglider pilots! it is just getting started, so it is far from perfect, but i think it has huge potential to become something great. the site is totally free. it will take a little time to figure out all that's going on, and how things work, but it is well worth the effort. my hope is that you will make time to visit the site, and post some of your flights to the hang gliding ladder. the more pilots who contribute, the better! i think there is a tremendous opportunity to attract new members to our sport from the mountain bike riding population. thanks in advance for joining me! update 6/23/07 due to lack of participation, the hang gliding ladder has been taken down.
Forums > BS (Banter Section) jump on today!i requested geoladders to give the hang gliding ladder another chance, and they did! please visit today, and post your latest flights. remember, you are posting for non-pilots to read, so don't make it too technical. you only get 500 characters to impress the mountain bikers. choose the hang gliding ladder in the upper right part of the screen. you'll have to create a screen name, but again, it's free! thanks a ton. no gps requiredyou don't need a gps to post a flight to the hang gliding ladder. just click on either "marshall foot launch" or "crestline foot launch" then on "post ride" button. fill in your flight duration, and a brief comment about the flight, and that's it! easy. eventually, i think this will lead to a capture the flag sort of game for us. we can fly in teams, and capture waypoints that will be displayed on google maps. you can check out "the game of control" in the mountain biking ladder for the general idea. I signed up! This could be GreatBut I really, really, want to post a gps flight. Try GPSBabelGive GPSBabel a shot: http://www.gpsbabel.org/ There's versions for Windows, Mac, and Linux, and it lets you convert from pretty much any GPS format to another, including pulling the data from a GPS device and saving it as KML (the google earth format) or IGC, whatever. I've been doing gpsbabel to pull from gps -> KML, then using google earth to do screenshots of my flights. Yes it works! Thanks Pete, Neat! Yes, Potential!I've posted a flight as a 'Personal Route'. If we can get it modified so that the 'routes' consist of turnpoints or something, then posting flights will make sense within the geoladders.com ...ummm... thing. There's potential here though. Owen and I were talking about things like pooling pilots' GPS tracks and making a 'house thermal' map, possibly different maps for different general weather conditions. What we really need is for several pilots to fly with their GPS devices on the same day and then post the flights as the same route. Google Earth Plus ($20/year more than the free version) will read from Garmin devices and help you see and store your tracks. GPSBabel can translate the .kml files you'd export from Google Earth to .gpx as needed by geoladders.com. I translated an .igc file from SeeYou to .gpx with GPSBabel only after I deleted the obviously SeeYou-specific lines at the end of the .igc using a text editor. I couldn't get it to 'play' in the route view, though it is depicted properly. Something odd with the .gpx file, I'm sure. Next time I fly I'll read the Garmin Geko with a program that stores directly to .gpx format. Good Flying, Maybe routes could be basedMaybe routes could be based on various accomplishments aside from distance and turnpoints, like altitude achieved or time aloft. I wasn't thinking and posted a route where my gps track was pretty sketchy, which happens sometimes with my flytec 5020. I used gpsbabel to get it into .gpx... thanks for that link. playbacki've posted my last two flights to geoladders.com, and you can view them there in playback mode (google maps). the first is a run to the cajon pass and then to rim of the world high school. the second is today's flight to an rc airstrip 22 miles southeast of crestline. |

Thanks for the link anyhow
Thanks for posting this, anyhow, Owen. I registered and tried to figure out the hanggliding portion, but at this point it would have been quite a few tracks of me staying within a few miles of AJ. Nonetheless, I am bummed the spaghetti didn't stick to the wall.
The cycling part is great! I need to err... lighten my ballast in hanggling and with a trashed knee cycling is my best cardio. I have good maps from francosmaps.com and octa.net, but geoladders has great info on fun OC and So Cal rides.
For those cyclists in the CSS, I live at the base of the Santa River trail (the one in Orange County, not the montain one), in sight of it, in case you ever have a flat or need some water or something.
