RASP weather model for LA Area

I am now running a local soaring weather forecast (DRJACK's BLIBMAPS) for our LA area. The model predicts thermal strength, wind condition and some other flight related paramters for various times of the day. Results are visualized in 2D maps that cover the area from Kagel in the upper left corner to Warner Springs in the lower right. The url right now is http://www.its.caltech.edu/~gliding/SOCAL/

URL changed to http://socal.wxmap.info

Forecasts are available for the same day at around 9am and for the next day at around 3pm (with the same day forecasts beeing based on most recent observation data). Also available is the forecast of the previous day.

It would be nice to get some feedback on validity of the soaring quality predictors for different areas. Feel free to also send me other comments and suggestions.

Have fun and happy flying!
Klaus

This is Great!

Klaus,

This is cool. I haven't kept up on the BLIPMAPS thing too much, but more is better, right? FWIW, I looked at your charts this morning enough to glean that I could expect 500 FPM fading to 300 FPM around Crestline in the afternoon. This is pretty much what I found. If it helps, my gps track igc is available.

I expect that your charts will prove very useful for those going XC from Elsinore. Seeing the blue-shaded area portraying the expected location of today's Elsinore convergence made it seem almost like cheating. Not to imply that I have much experience going after that feature.

What's your data source for the soundings?

I've put a link to your charts into this website's WX page. Please email if the url changes.

Thanks very much for this!

GPS track images and flight gory details on my website.

Good Flying,
Ken Howells

Sounding data

The soundings for all locations are interpolated from real soundings (e.g. in Ontario) by taking into account the landscape and the other current output parameters of the model grid for that location.

Perhaps somebody who flies Elsinore everyday can comment on how good the conversion forecast actually is. Currently, the high resolution model (1.3km grid when you click on 'Local Model of the Crestline Area') is for the San Bernadino site but I could change that to around Elsinore if it turns out to be more useful there.

Cheers
Klaus

Thanks Klaus

Thanks for this info!

For my fellow n00bs, I'd like to point out this link:

http://www.hanggliding.org/viewtopic.php?t=1815&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

Which 'splains some of this stuff (like the soundings at the bottom of the page on Klaus' link). It took me two cups of coffee to read through the first couple of posts on my link, but Southside John and others give good explanations.

Link Changed

All the image files are becoming too large for my home directory, so I got them a new place that should then remain for the future: http://socal.wxmap.info
