750/Regionals 8 June, 07Well, it was a nice clear day. SE at the 750 at 11:20 and easily soarable. They might have been going up high, but we had more gliders to fly, so didn't take the thermals very high. Turned more SW and was reliably soarable all afternoon. A group went to Crestline after 13:00 and got their fill of ridge soaring. Base wind got stronger and stronger, and the last round I did, from Regionals at 15:00, it was actually pretty rough and bouncy. Got to 4700 drifting fast NE of Regionals, and when I went for Marshall it was rough enough that I didn't actually buzz the top with the U2 160. Hit lift as I started my downwind leg that last flight and had to swing way East to lose the altitude. Steve was swinging his legs side to side to keep flying straight on final and he got bumped real hard as he approached the spot, ending up 40 feet past it. Mike had a lot of turb on approach, but it got smooth for his final and he touched down lightly quite near the center of the spot (costing me ANOTHER buck!). Flight gory details on my website. Well, my Quest chugged 5 of us up to Crestline for a very fun day. Mark Zahn got his harrier up to just short of 7K, by my reckoning. I got 6600 a couple of times on very wide thermals over Billboard. I didn't want to follow them back, but they seemed to go higher. Mike Z., Kim, and Tom all had good flights... I'll try to get video of their launches up soon.
I left Crestline when I started wondering about my Falcon's penetration to the LZ. It wasn't a problem, but the Marshall ridge was so turbulent I hung around for 15 minutes or so.
The LZ was a bit of Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, but Tom didn't get any good whacks or misses on video.
I didn't fire up my BBQ. 5:30 saw a very sparse LZ as a number of pilots had family commitments and Dan and another ATOS pilot were still up (they arrived as we launched).
So, Kim drove me back up, I barrelled home through suprisingly light traffic, BBQed for the wife, and got to see my munchkin before she crashed. Even better.
Boy, is it nice not to have to unload the glider at home. Thanks for heading that up, Owen. Thanks for doing such a great job on the shelves, Dan.
