glider storage facility at andy jackson airpark

i'd like to see how many of us would use a secure glider storage facility at the andy jackson airpark if one were available.

so, would you?

glider storage

I would be interested in a short-term overnight basis. I live in San Diego and often come up with family members on the weekend to fly and then shop, camp or go to the water park. I have in the past paid an overnight storage fee to Rob for the convenience of not worrying about a glider on top of my car.

Storage space in the LZ wow! I like it!
I won't mind clearing out some space in my garage so I could park the car in there again.

Not driving 100 miles(round trip) with a big drag source on the truck, just the improved mileage I'd get would probably pay for the cost of renting the space.

I think it would be great to be able to store Gear on site there. Maybe a harness along with the glider.

Mark

Depends on the price

If the prices are about the same or lower as those on the SHGA site, I'd be interested.

While I have a good rack on my van and a spot in my garage, the hassle of storing a glider 7 feet up in a tight space and driving it around my morning business appointments are aspects of hang gliding I could live without. Plus, the reduced wear and tear of the extra transitions, tie downs, and driving would probably make the rental fees worth it.

The over under is around $200 or $300 a year for me, depending on the quality of the storage. I'd be willing to pony up a couple of years in advance to help keep the initial costs of the project down. I would also assist in its development in any way possible.

If there is a source of electricity, or maybe using solar (if possible), I'd be willing to help set up a security camera on said storage unit, since you'd be talking about up to a hundred K dollars worth of kites in that thing.

simple is better... i think

at the moment, i think a shared storage facility makes sense. sylmar has created two beautiful storage units with individual locker doors, and each glider slides into a 14 inch diameter pvc tube. very nice indeed, but pretty expensive. i'd like to keep costs down.

i think we could build shelves inside a shipping container fairly inexpensively, and give each glider owner a key to the lock. for folks who are uncomfortable with this level of security (or lack thereof) rob mckenzie offers the perfect solution with his personal storage unit.

i'd like to see this become a way that the css can bring in funds, but i also would like it to be affordable for all css members. under $200 a year is what i'm thinking.

would this be tax deductible alan?

Simple is better, but not deductible.

It does not look like a monthly or annual storage charge could be deductible for those using the service. To be a donation, they can't receive any goods or services in return.

There is a Membership Exception that can make memberships deductible and can provide for "free or discounted admissions to the charitable
organization’s facilities or events", but it is capped at $75 (plus inflation allowance) so our existing membership fee uses the available amount.

XLnt Idea

how about a lump sum buy-in to defray the initial costs and an annual maintenance fee which will cover new paint and kick css some cash too.
simple easy to keep track of too.
annual fee could be paid with css dues?
I'm in. the co-op atos needs a home.
and on the subject of community, it would create a home for "club gliders". airworthy ships that (qualified)visiting pilots and or students could fly. I'd be willing to donate my talon to the stable.

HG & PG Storage

I would like to extend the coverage to both HG & PG equipment. I like the idea of a buy in and annual maintenance fee but that may exclude some because of the relatively high initial cost.

I think we should leave the rental/sharing to Hi Adventure except between friends. I would love to take the Talon for a spin.

PG storage

I'm thinking of buying a motorcycle sometime this year, and having a place to store my PG up at AJ so I could ride my bike up to go flying would be really nice.

pg storage too!

i think pg storage is an excellent idea too. i know our club has many more paraglider pilots than hang glider pilots, and if having a place to store your wing and harness on site is helpful, then let's make sure that's part of the project.

A Place A Glider Can Call Home

Sounds like the planning is coming along well. Tentative costs sound quite reasonable.

Alan

HG storage sounds good to me too

I also would like to see a secure glider storage facility at the andy jackson airpark.

I believe there may be a fairly simple and inexpensive method of individually locking a glider to the shelves or walls of the container for those who would like a little extra security. I've long thought of this when I leave my glider on the car rack while going into a store or to get something to eat. One way that comes to mind would be to weld together a few pieces of steel to make something like a dog muzzle for each end to the glider. Then lock these by chain to the supports the glider is resting on. The idea is that the glider can't be slid off the shelf in either direction when the muzzles are in place.

storage container location

rob mentioned to me today that he thought a good place for the storage container would be between the two staircases. i think this is a fine idea. after pacing off the distance, a 40 foot storage unit would fit nicely. from the parking lot, we could use the new tractor to cut into the side of the lz a little and create a flat and level pad. if we did it right, we could match the elevation of the top of the new glider storage unit to that of the ground level of the lz. if we wanted to, we could build a deck between the two. this could provide a place for picnic tables and chairs, and a roof over the storage unit to help keep it cool.

storage container costs

the all in costs for the container will be about 4k. so here's what i'm thinking at the moment.

the offer would be available to css members only. we do a one time buy in fee of $250.00 per pilot. that gets you a key to the container, and one year of storage. then, it's $100 a year after that.

the container will easily hold 54 hang gliders, and 26 paragliders. i propose that each pilot is allowed up to two wings of their choice in the container for the storage fee.

how does that sound to you?

Storage Container

$250(for two wings) to start and $100/year after the first years sounds good to me. I am willing to front end some to the money to get it going. We may need until May or so for enough pilots to sign up. Who is going to keep track of who is in & who is not? What if anything does the club have to do with the administration and any profit or loss?

Let's get it going.

Kim Floyd
760-680-9479

are you in?

it would be great to get 16 pilots to commit now. if we could do that, then all the upfront costs are covered, and all the money from that point forward goes to the club.

if we can't do that, then a few of us need to step up, and plunk down a bigger chunk of change, and either be reimbursed when more pilots join in, or we just figure that we are buying more years of storage up front.

i envision a system where participating members are given (along with your css membership card) two stickers that have a number (1 through 80) on them. you put a sticker on your glider bag(s), and you are good for the year. the next year, the color of the stickers change (not unlike car registration stickers).

right now, i believe i have a commitment for $250 from the following 8 pilots:

alan crouse
dan deweese
kim floyd
pete johanson
owen morse
bob pobocik
john wright
mike zeller

we're half way there! am i missing anyone?

six more to go

thanks to all who have jumped in so far! i really think this is going to be a great club project. for those of you sitting on the fence, or who are just learning about this project, i hope you will join us. it really is quite a deal.

if, for example, you decide to keep your wing(s) in storage for five years, that works out to be only $10.83 per month. pretty amazing. and, after all the up front storage container expenses are covered, your money goes straight to the css. so it's a win-win.

i'd like to move forward, and take an "if you build it, they will come" approach. however, i'd also like to keep the administrative hassles to a minimum. it seems the cleanest way to do that is to offer storage as an option when it's time to renew our club memberships, and that needs to happen by may 31st. so think about whether this storage option would work for you, so we can send you a key along with your membership card.

glider storage

Just a note to let you know what a deal this price is for glider storage. The price at Torrey went to
$600.00 a year for one wing.

What a rip

sounds like they're gettin

sounds like they're gettin soaked. way to go Jebb.

LZ Storage

OWEN, What is the next step on the storage unit?? I am not much for tractor driving. We might lose the existing container and lawn if you put me on the tractor. I can do some preliminary administration of the project $$ collection etc.

If the storage unit looks

If the storage unit looks like a go, please count me in for a spot for a HG. I can commit to the up front fee and a years rental fee up front as well. Thanks, alan Coffield 951-244-0786

here is where we stand at the moment

i don't want to count my chickens... but a very generous offer has been made by one of our members to supply the club with a 40 foot storage container. this is amazing. really amazing. it just goes to show the kind of folks that make up this world-class flying site.

the board has green-lighted the whole glider storage project.

to avoid (foot) traffic congestion, and to encourage loading and unloading of gliders on the west side of the parking lot, there has been a decision to put the container just south of the port-a-potty rather than between the staircases on the east side of the parking lot.

placing the container on the west side of the parking lot also opens up the opportunity for cooling the container by way of "earth tubing". rebar dan has been researching this and making some deals with some of his builder contacts to get a hold of a large number of pvc pipes, and a trench digging tractor. gene has once again offered his services to run the tractor for burying the tubes.

i have been learning how to drive our new tractor. i'm not being humble when i say "i suck"... but i am getting better, and i do enjoy it. i've begun grading a spot for the new container, and it is getting close.

so things are moving along. i do believe we are ready to start collecting funds now. these funds will go towards shelves, paint, turbine roof vents, keys and locks, etc. we've got a dozen folks who have shown interest so far, and that should more than cover these costs. any excess funds will go straight to the css.

i should gather email addresses, and phone numbers from all interested parties. please let me know if you'd be willing, and in what way you might be able to help out with this project.

heading in a new direction

our visit to wallaby ranch and quest last week proved to be very educational. we learned that storage containers that are not insulated can get crazy hot, (we kinda knew that already) and that insulated (reefer) containers stay nice and cool even in the blazing sun (very impressive actually). it is for that reason that we feel that an insulated container is the way to go.

this changes a few things. we won't be taking advantage of the (non insulated) container that was going to be donated to the club, but we now will no longer need to worry about earth tubing, or ceiling turbines for cooling.

i think we are also going to cut back on the original shelving layout of three gliders per shelf, in favor of a wider aisle down the middle of the container with two gliders per shelf. this will make it easier to load and unload gliders alone.

so there you go. a few changes, but i think we'll have a first class place to store our wings soon!

see you saturday!

insulated container

Now you're talk'n. Number 14 please.

delegations

Owen, thanks for initiating this. It's not as if you've never done anything for the club *cough**ranch house**cough**cough***. Please think of ways others may help you in this.

I talked with a client today who ships a lot of things overseas and asked him about containers. I'll look for freight forwarders to query about insulated containers, but if I could get the exact type that Wallaby uses, that will help. I am assuming it's not the powered type (i.e. not refrigerated, just insulated).

If someone wants to give

If someone wants to give us an un-insulated container, couldn't we insulate it ourselves?

perhaps...

there was a lot of discussion about this, but in the end, we didn't feel we could insulated it as cleanly and efficiently as the already insulated containers.

storage container located!

with initial phone calls first made by rebar dan and gary glibbery, i set out to physically look at a few more insulated (reefer) containers today.

california containers in long beach had three 40 foot containers for sale. after inspection, i determined two of the three were unacceptable. the third, although beautiful on the inside, had had a substantial encounter with another container (or similar) earlier in it's life, and the back corner, a small section of the roof, and the entire refrigerator unit were damaged. my heart sank, as i began to realize that this was now a deal breaker. i chatted a bit with the owner of the company, and long story short, got him to agree to repair the container, weld steel plate over the entire back, and put a fresh coat of paint on the whole container... for no additional charge.

i will head back on wednesday to view all the repair work before paint goes on thursday or friday. delivery will be scheduled sometime the week of may 14th, 2007.

I'm new and I would like in

I'm new and I would like in if there is still room. Well, actually, I'm returning post many years out of the sport. I was part of CSS and Andy Jackson's in the 80's, before and during the Forestry Department’s mandate to enforce an H3 requirement. At this moment, I'm not part of CSS and/or Andy Jackson's and I don't own a glider, although as soon as I get authorization to fly Crestline again, I plan to purchase a new glider and rejoin both. I have made arrangements to rent from Rob tomorrow for my first day back, provided the winds cooperate.

the eagle has landed!

visit (and walk into) our new insulated storage container at the lz!

the truck driver who delivered the container today recommended that we now place a small footing under each corner of the container. apparently this will insure that the container stays true and helps the doors to operate properly throughout its lifetime.

rebar dan took measurements of the inside of the container so he can get started on the glider racks.

move-in day is scheduled for may 31st!

paid participants so far include:

alan crouse

i thank you, and the css thanks you too.

building the nest

Hey Rebar, if you need a hand drop me a line. I have an oxy acetylene welder, chop saw, saws all, porta band saw, grinder, and many more tools. I even know how to use some of them.

That's Amazing!

Anyway, thanks, Owen. I'll be in the LZ every day from Thurs through Sunday. If there is anything a ordinary shmuck (i.e. one whose nickname does not reference metalworking) can do, lemme know.

I can help with the nest too

Let me know if I can do anything Rebar, I also have some tools: A chopsaw, two angle grinders, a saws all, a bench grinder, portable drill press.

I can certainly cut and prep metal and help out any other way.

I have a some experience welding with a stick welder but that's mostly with 1/8 inch or thicker metal.

Grinder - painter- installer

I'm just heading out to the welding patch w/ nephew Kyle in tow. we'll weld the arms on the channels today. "Should" be done by2 pm. i'll drop the units off next to the container. someone could round off the shop cuts on the 1x3 arms. Might have to clean them better before painting too. Then they install. I should be able to get some heavy duty DS sticky tape for the top. if not I have some silicone caulk to keep the top from sliding. we have extra 1x2 tube to fit small piece into the floor to wedge into place. A chop saw and a home wire feed will do the job. I thought a 2x4 and wedges would work to spread the sides of the container where its squished in a bit. more powerful method might be req'd. There's a 1x2 for each set of racks to act as a spreader at the top. should be tacked in place.

grinder

Do we have a generator?

not yet

my generator (a coleman) turned out to be a cheap chinese p.o.s. and is dead. the club gen has a grommet broken on the fuel line/ tank jct and leaks like a sieve.
4 or 5 rack units still have to get washed off w/ detergent and none of the sharp corners have been knocked off yet. I'm going to pick up a gen / welder thursday so the whole thing along with paint could be finished by the end of this coming weekend.

ground

found a working generator today (1500 watter) and rounded the sharp edges off. I think that I'll cart the remaining units over to the car wash and clean them off there. with a chop saw to cut some pieces of 1x2 tubing that these could be in the container and functional tomorrow. i'll go buy some 2x4s to act as spreaders at the top until a larger generator comes about and the planned material can be tacked into place. tomorrow. if anyone wants to spray paint and help stand them into place, gimme a call 9092263331 bring a chop saw if you can.

Dan, There are 11 2x4s in

Dan,

There are 11 2x4s in the equipment storage container that would probably do for such a purpose.

fine

Oh sure fine. There you go taking all the fun. By the time I have time to help it'll be all done.

It coming along fast!

I held a couple pieces in place while I watched two guys with real know how put the shelves up today. Rebar Dan and Dusty have the tools and they have the talent. The storage container is looking great.

A Name

Well Alan let me fly his Falcon 195 today (sure is a nice flying Falcon) and i told him i would put his glider back in the Nest... So lets vote on the Name...

Bird cage/Aviary/The Nest/

OK or Not!

toybox

That's my vote...that's where we keep our toys

club gliders

i like the idea of coming up with a cool name for our storage container. throw 'em out there, and one is bound to stick!

btw, there are two "club gliders" in there at the moment. a wills wing fusion 141, and a moyes xtralite 164. these gliders are available for you to fly. they are numbered 99 and 100 respectively.

i still have number tags for your gliders. if you put your name on the glider, i can tag them for you, or hand you your tags next time i see you.

i opened the doors to the container today at 12:30 pm, it was 84 degrees outside, and it felt like a cool 68 degrees inside. very nice indeed.

club gliders

the moyes xtralite 164 is a big glider that thermals nicely and flies great. has vg too. i'd say its a solid H3 glider. take her out for a flight. for pilots on the larger end of the size range. by the looks of it, this glider has less than 30 hours on it and is in great shape.
