Crestline/Marshall 9/4 & 9/5 Hwy 18 closed- Fire off I-15 - Huge Thunderstorms!!!Launched Crestline on Monday 9/4/2006 after after 6pm. Wind speed was under 17 MPH. Crazy weather day with massive thunder storms, rain from Big Bear starting around 11:00 a.m. all the way to Crestline for a good part of the day. Traffic was a mess with all the closed roads, bad weather, and holiday traffic. I flew over HWY 18, and checked out the tanker spill a few times on Monday evening around sunset. I launched Crestline at 12:10 p.m. Tuesday 9/5/2006. Wind was under 8-18 mph. Huge CU's starting to form, and a large building cluster of sick looking clouds just behind launch. I flew around back at Crestline for a while in strong 800 ft up air for as long as I could handel watching this monster of a thunderstorm waiting to dump. I ended up making my way out to the front range, and top landing Marshall at about 1:30 pm. It startet raining (light) on Marshall just after I landed. Launched Marshall a couple hours later into WEST wind gusting harder than 15 mph. Fire broke out around 4 pm near the I-15 in the pass. Conditions were strong all the way to the ground were the LZ was cooking with strong W wind @ almost the same speed as my wing can go without the speed system. It took me the entire flight after leaving the Marshall zone to make it accross clound peak spine. This included full speed bar, and nasty rotor from the W wind. Ended up crabbing to the LZ for a very nice landing on the grass. I have attached some pics from the day for your enjoyment (More pics in the galery!!!). No other pilots flew this day due to the roads closures, weather? Have Fun - Fly Safe!!!
