4 enhancement requests4 suggestions to the webmeister... 1) As an example, looking at the postings in this discussion: 2) With the same example discussion as above, can we minimize (or maybe remove them completly) the links under the messsage: 3) It seems that I can automatically log back into these pages (without re-supplying user name + password) within a day or two. But after that there seems to be an expiration for automatic logon. Can this expiration be set to a least a month ? 4) When returning to this forum, I want to know what is new, and find that the best tool is this page: Thank you for considering these Ken. Forums > Website Forum Thank you KenThanks Ken. :-) Can you also get the name of the person making the reply, at the top of their message frame ? I KNEW you'd ask that! When I first tried it, there were confusing and unsightly extra blank lines between the titles and author names and the comments they go with, so I put it off until later. Update: DONE. |

Thanks for the suggestions
Thanks for the suggestions Jerome.
1) I agree about the name placement, and I've found myself scrolling down to find it first as well. I haven't looked at the code, but this shouldn't be too hard. I also miss the 'number of views' stat from the old forum - good barometer, I think.
2) I think the categorization links will prove useful in the long run. Perhaps I can tweak the theme to make them more compact.
3) Making client sessions persist for very long times is wasteful of server resources and a security risk, though the risk factor here is low. I'm going to bring back the 'who is on' list once I figure out how to make being listed optional and only visible to logged-in users; sessions with extended persistence would render the list meaningless. Most browsers I've seen offer to remember login info, so perhaps one could bookmark the login page and the just click the button since the browser has always already filled in the form.
4) The 'recent posts' link in the left menu already goes to the tracker page, and does list everything that's been added to the site recently, in reverse chronological order. I've been using that a lot too. I've moved it up in the menu, to just below the Board Notes link. The active forum topics list on the right moves a topic to the top of the list whenever something new is added, so if you see that the order has changed, that's a clue. I can have it list more topics.
RSS
Each forum topic area (Pilot Reports, BS, etc.) generates an RSS feed. You can click the orange-square-with-white-arcs icon in the location box and bookmark the feed - then just by looking at your bookmarks you can see what's new/active without actually going to the site. I'll look into whether the tracker can generate a feed.
Again, thanks for the feedback and suggestions. Keep 'em coming.
Good Flying,
Ken Howells
