Torrey Pines, Saturday June 10, 2006With yesterday's prediction of just "a few hundred feet over launch" at Marshall, I chose the coast instead. And it turned out to be a good thing, as yesterday was probably the nicest air I have encountered at Torrey Pines. I got 530' above the ridge at one point, but it was easy to stay 300' over and cruise from the Pier to the North Park (where ridge drops down to a beach parking). I did the distance 6 times (3 round trips). Reaching the North end of the park was easy as you could ignore the low ridge one normally follows for lift and just coast above the top of the higher back ridge (see picture). At the other end, the whole area in front of the aquarium was lifty and there was no need for the usual rush to leave the area (see picture). Just for fun I flew at the end of the day without a vario. That feels so strange not to have the comforting chirping sound. I noticed that a part of my harness chest strap was coming undone and Steve used his industrial machine to sew through a pile of webbing as if it was butter. Problem solved. :-) Forums > Pilot Reports Flight > PG Sites > San Diego

Sunday Jume 11, 2006 and Re: Saturday June 10, 2006
Yes the forecasts have been dismal, and I mentioned to Dianne that her husband can, uh, make it sound kinda dreary... it was great soaring today. Rob looked to be 500 over in a tandem pg at 1:30 and shortly after we got 700 over in 700fpm climbs I flew a really sweet T2 that went 80mph sustained with no flutter and not a bad glide even at that speed. Dexa flew a Falon-3-170, packs down to six feet for travel, and performs better than the previous models with a new sail-cut... JR ground-looped it during his first day on Mt McKenzie, (poor instruction, I should have told him to wait for the dust-devil to pass) so I get to rebuild it tommorrow at work. -Peter S
