i am gearing up to head for the owens tomorrow evening.

i have 1 more spot in my car (from USC/downtown LA) - who is heading up?

i still have no retrieve organized and it would be great if i can get in touch with anyone that has a spot left (i am a bag pilot so don't need much space ;) )

if you happen to be there let me have your number or call me: 323 482 50 79 or jonas at buchli dot org

Tuesday Soboba to Andy Jackson

Soboba to AJ Airpark looks good to me for Tuesday afternoon given the big lapse rate and the SE flow. I haven't done anything more than boat around Soboba before, so any XC info would be helpful, and the more pilots the merrier. I don't see why hangies can't do the flight, but I was thinking this would be a bag-fest while the big boys go OTB from Crestline.

SPOT Satellite Messenger

I got a SPOT satellite messenger recently. I only have a couple of tests with it but a friend has flown with one for years and likes it.

By pressing different buttons you can get the SPOT to send three kinds of messages. All include your GPS coordinates and a link to your location on google maps.

Messages:

1. I’m ok.
You can prewrite the exact text. Goes to whatever email addresses and SMS text enabled cell phones you have set up on the website.

Marshall - Saturday October 25, 2008

Today didn't start out too promising...

Launched shortly after noon and was only able to gain 1000' over Marshall launch and then altitude caps were decreasing. Landed after 37 minutes of that.

Without much ambition, re-launched without the warm clothes at 3pm and started making better altitude gains. Enough to glide back to Crestline after seeing Gene make it back there. Glided back with Bob and found some sweet lift in front of Billboard. Got to 7000' or so and glided to Pine where we returned to altitude. But the best was in the bowl to the West of Pine: Picture. I got up to 7600' there. GPS was indicting up to 18 mph of North wind at that altitude, but below it was converging between South and North. Pushed further West and then returned to Crestline, then to over the 215 Freeway. An unexpected afternoon delight.

Bishop/Owens Valley Trip This Weekend, Oct 24-26

Hey guys, I'm heading up to Bishop this weekend from Pasadena for some flying and am looking for anyone that wants to come. I'll be leaving after work and just bivy'ing somewhere Friday/Saturday night. Worse case scenario I'll be renting a car and heading up by myself but if we could carpool or share costs that would be ideal. I'm planning on doing a hike n' fly on Saturday probably in the Whites and then meeting up with some locals on Sunday. Contact me at:

Friday October 17, 2008 - Over the back

Launched at noon, started sinking but then got up to 8000' between Marshall and Crestline. Wind was light but SSE, so I thought going "over the back" would be more interesting than battling a headwind towards the dam. Glided to Pine and there go up to altitude again before crossing to Lake Silverwood and the desert. Max altitude of 8500', but the nice part was the thermal were soft-edged, stayed high and kept many landing options, and the air was very clear (see pictures). 20 mile flight to Hesperia.

So Cal XC League

I’m FINALLY putting the wheels in motion for the Southern California XC League and I think it’s long overdue. Everyone has been talking about wanting a league – so here it is. The Northern California XC League has been, and continues to be, a huge success. The system works extremely easy and efficiently. I will be using the same format as the NCXCL with just a few exceptions. The league is open to both PG’s and HG’s and will be broken down into categories. The league is starting late this year so it will be abbreviated as compared to the plan for 2009. This will work well to get the ball rolling, spread the word, and work out any kinks before the league goes into full swing in 2009.

april forth

heads up. Friday the 4th is showing potential. if the marine layer stays away. fingers crossed

Two new site records

Bruce Barmakian broke the RW site record with a flight to Lone Pine (168 miles) yesterday.

And on a side note the rather paltry FW record fell as well (80 miles to Johannesberg). Btw, the flight was done on the Fusion SP that is for sale in the market place section - no interest financing available :-)

And in case you are wondering we called Joshua Approach beforehand for clearance to fly up 395.
