archivesSaturday 9/30 Could Be... InterestingFrom the Friday 3 A.M. NWS Forecast Discussion: SATURDAY: WITH DEEPER MOISTURE IN PLACE AND AN INVERTED TROUGH TRACKING ACROSS OUR AREA...SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE POSSIBLE JUST ABOUT ANYWHERE IN THE OUR CWA (extreme southwestern California including Orange, San Diego, western Riverside and southwestern San Bernardino counties). SATURDAY WILL BE DOWNRIGHT TROPICAL WITH HIGHER THAN NORMAL HUMIDITIES. PW`S (precipitable water) IN EXCESS OF 2 INCHES ARE FORECAST OVER THE LOWER DESERTS. EASTERLY WINDS FROM 20-30 KT ALOFT WILL TRANSPORT ANY THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY WESTWARD ACROSS THE MTNS AND INTO THE COASTAL AND VALLEY ZONES. THESE WILL BE FAST MOVING STORMS WHICH WILL LOWER THE FLASH FLOOD THREAT. BUT WITH SUCH HIGH PRECIPITABLE WATER VALUES...FLASH FLOODING IS DISTINCTLY POSSIBLE IN TRAINING ECHOS. Andy founded the original Pinecrest Airpark here in San Bernardino. Rob was President and an owner of Wills Wing, Inc. Both men dedicated their lives to hang gliding and free flight in general, and we lost both to prostate cancer. Heart breakerWe've lost another brother: http://www.shga.com/forum/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1098 Let's learn from this tragedy. Let's re-examine our site and our habits. Are our flying habits and landings safe? A visit to Rob's accident "red dot" page shows that we may well be next on the news, for reasons much worse even than developer hassles. What can we do to honor Jeff's life by learning from Cloudy Friday 8-29Launched Crestline in the Sport 2 around 3:30 not expecting much of a soaring flight due to the high cloud cover. There wasn't much ridge lift so I made for the billboard and was rewarded with a nice smooth thermal to 6400. I decided to head east instead of my usual trip to Pine. Made it to the turn-out before turning back for the Crestline ridge. I was low when I got back and had to head out to regionals, but not for long. Found another light thermal that drifted back over Cloud. Worked the light, but consistent lift to about 5800 and turned back for the Billboard. Got up, went to Pine and back and Pine again. Got to 6000 over Pine and flew west toward SugarPine. I got one peak sort of it, before turning back for Pine. Got back up over Pine and went back to the Billboard, Crestline and then out to Marshall and the radio towers before landing. |
