Marshall, 23 Aug. 08

Normal summer day, on the cool side for August. Plenty soarable though the cores were narrow and not many thermals were much over 500 FPM. The wind was a little more westerly than usual mid-afternoon and the thermals were drifting quickly. I kept thinking I'd locked onto a core and then on the next circle I'd be getting rolled out at some point. The inversion was pronounced and climbs slowed down between 4500 and 5000 - I rode several promising ones up before even trying to go back to Crestline, and then it took two tries and going back rather low. Pine was pretty turbulent but I was mostly between 5500 and 6200 over there. Above 5000 MSL my vario was reading 200 feet low; I guess we had some higher pressure above the inversion.
