archivesEveryday PG cranking it up in a fat thermal with Dave Biddle in his sailplaneElsinore Sat and SunSat we arrived at launch at 12 and the back flag was starting to turn west. By 12:15 launch was waffling in and then down. I launched at 12:25 into 5 mph in. Got right up at the house thermal. Went back to the rock piles and got up and had to work the very sharp edges of the thermals. Pretty bumpy. I had 3 non-event collapses. Dave Biddle in his sailplane came over and got into a thermal with me. We got 4 complete 360's together. Everyday Mike and Dave Biddle in his sailplane cranking up in a fat thermal. Got four complete 360's. I got lots of pics. 6.2K max El. Top landed after 1 hr and 40 min. I drove Splaterquists truck down. Crestline, Sunday 8/10/08Normal sunny day, on the clear side and pretty breezy at Crestline. Launched a T2C 154 at 14:05 and ridge soared near launch for a while. Followed Hoffman to BB and Hoffman kept on going to Pine, so I followed. Got to 6500 there but neither of us (nor Stan) found anything immediately west of Pine. Bumpy. I ended up cruising out over the flats, relaxing and enjoying being far from the ground. Headed for Cloud and got up right away, so back to Crestline. Too bumpy to buzz launch. Did a VGT speed run from BB to Regionals and got up again from the Cloud spine. Back to Crestline briefly, where I got rolled left hard once east of launch, then a speed run out to Regionals and down to the LZ (meeting Leo Bynum). Cored some sink, then at 350 AGL found strong lift on the north apron, so I rode it to 3000, cored sink again and went in to land. Intentionally didn't go back near the training hill because I thought it might be bumpy. Landed about 100 feet from the SW corner - seeing that edge of the LZ approaching was distracting and intimidating, but ignored it and had a very nice flare and landing at 15:45. |
