Elsinore Sat 5/31

Saturday totally a different day than Friday. Some pilots were good enough to get above the constant up and down cycles over the spine.
Many of us struggled for quite awhile. Some finally giving up and
seeking the LZ. After at least 30 minutes of tight scratching
with several wings found and cored a tight thermal which broke me through the wind layer. The pilots who had gotten up earlier
had already left for X/C. Jerry who I had flown with on Friday again was my flying partner. The stronger lift was just behind launch where I spent alot of time. Tried going to South towers early and got drilled. Saw Jerry heading for Rad Dans and heard Everday Mike on his new radio expressing how good it was down near


Website Outage, 5-31-08 to 6-2-08

Our website, along with thousands of others, went down Saturday afternoon and was not restored for close to 36 hours. The problem was an electrical explosion at the data center in Houston where the server is located; the fire department there ordered that the backup generators could not be turned on, due to the nature of the damage.

The servers were not damaged and nothing was lost from our website.


Impressions From First U2 Flight

Mike B. let me fly his U2 145 last week. I’ve been flying the Sport 2 155 for a long time, then last year I tried a Talon 154 for about 20 flights. But I hook in on the very low side of the weight range for that wing and it isn’t as easy to turn as the Sport 2. By contrast I hook in at just a tick above the middle of the weight range for the U2 and it seemed to turn about as easily as my Sport 2. (Apparently there's something to those recommended weight ranges.) I also tended to get PIO at higher speeds in that large Talon, I experienced no PIO in the U2.

I flew Sunday and when we got to Marshall it appeared that a renegade tractor had gotten loose and reshaped the mountain. Not content to merely fix the road it gave Marshall peak a new look, that big depression on the north side has been filled. I saw Dusty immediately took advantage by top landing there. Now my only excuse for balking at a top landing is “the sun was in my eyes.”
Flying over the 750 it looked like some grooming was done there too.
