3 hour tour day - Dec. 13th 2008 **** CancelledOriginally Posted 2008-09-15 07:30 The year is almost up, I suppose I should actually gin up some activities. While I can do a ham cram or some other non-flying activity, or an activity at our home site, in this case I am thinking about a road trip. Here's the problem with road trips: who wants to go anywhere in the Spring and Fall seasons, when it likely will be best at home? But, December is another story. December 13th, I invite everyone to join me in a day of chasing the wind. I'll call this a "Three Hour Tour," not because we'll only be gone a few hours (try all day), but because the radius of the chase will be 3 hours. That basically takes us up to Santa Barbara or down to San Diego. Here are my preliminary plans: 1. Meet at the AJ LZ at 8:00 AM Some guidelines This trip is aimed at mid-level intermediate pilots who need more sites for their next rating. That's why some of us got all over California in the last year. Based on my experience, I encourage h2s/p2s and freshly minted h3s/p3s to come along with the idea of being drivers to check out the sites and learn from the experiences the other pilots have that day. That's a little lesson I came up with based on my own trip to a new site this weekend. Please respond with thoughts, suggestions, etc. Sites > SoCal News > Events YeahJW, Sounds like a workable plan and I will make every effort to be there. Mike B. Horse Canyon Holiday Fly-In 12/13/08See announcement post on our events page. Plan D:Bates Beach is now on the list, thanks to winds forecast in the high teens and lots of low moisture. May need some yoda-esque forecasting help from Southside on this one. I hope to be there, but willI hope to be there, but will not know untill tomorrow (friday) evening. Missed Elsinore Fly-in due to family obligations, Damnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn! John, thanks for putting this on. Gary Rating: H3 WeatherThe weather as it stands is not good. Please get your radio gear out and fly a flight with it before you go so we can be on radio. When Dave, Mike, Mike and I went to Santa Barbara last year, radios would have been a big help.
This is a H3/P3 trip. While we may fly sites that are H2/P2 or unrated, I will not take into account H2/P2 skills in picking the site (and it may not be one of the above). I'd encourage less experienced pilots to come along as drivers/observers. As I learned at Blackhawk, there's a lot to be gained in that role vs. pushing it and flying when you don't have the experience or gear for a site.
After getting a nice, early start at 8:15, I am hoping we will get a good flight or two in whereever we go. My car will be stopping at a good (not fancy but not fast food) restaurant on the way home and I hope that it won't be the only one in the parking lot. Hopefully, we'll have a lot of fun stories to swap.
